$1.2 million transferred to athletic department to pay off Sherrill
The last time Mississippi State University made a football coaching change, it cost at least $2.4 million to buy out Jackie Sherrill and his staff and hire Sylvester Croom and his staff - not an uncommon figure in the big-dollar world of college athletics.
But it's how the athletic department got some of that money that drew concern from one state College Board member Wednesday.
The MSU Foundation in 2004 authorized a $1.2 million transfer to the Bulldog Foundation to help cover half the cost of the change....
I think the concern here is that you have the MSU Foundation which one assumes is for academic related purposes and the Bulldog Foundation for athletic purposes. Transferring money from the former to the latter appears to violate the separation between the two foundations, and might be objected to by donors who thought they were giving to university activities other than athletics. That would appear to be the purpose of having the two funds. The IHL is right to raise the issue.
Of course, everyone knew that hiring Sherrill would end badly.
