I was told today that the USM presidential search committee is considering Hank Bounds to replace Shelby Thames. Is there any confirmation/denial of this? If true, then this is really bad for USM. If you want a real president, then he's not it. If you want someone who will be immediately captured by the good old boys, then Hank Bounds is just what the doctor ordered. USM will become a glorified high school in deed and in fact.

A statement starting with this phrase has to be nonsense. The committee has not "considered anything" since it has not met in some time nor will it be at that stage when it does next meet.
I think it is likely that this rumor is either comng from Bounds himself or from people who are urging him to put his name in the hat (or who perhaps know that he is) rather from the committee. Reporter is right on about this process -- the committee won't even see the files until Greenwood compiles all of them and sets up the files in a secure reading space in February.
You can't keep people from outside the commitee (potential candidates or acquaintances who now them) from talking. You also can't stop people from spreading rumors . . . .
Relax. We have over a month before there will be any reason to think anyone with "inside" knowlege is leaking if we start hearing anything. Even then, I'd be cautious about taking anything that somes from the street at face value . . .
We need an effective state supt. of education just as badly as USM needs an effective president. If Mr. Bounds is doing a good job where he is, I sincerely hope he will stay where he is.
For some reason, the font size is acting up.

Some people don't think Bounds could seriously be considered. Remember, some people doubted that SFT had the power to obtain the USM presidency in 2002.
Bounds and SFT have one thing common. They are both close to Bud Ginn. Ginn really worked the good old boys for SFT and it worked in 2002. He has also assisted Bounds in career moves ...from Forrest County..to Lumberton...to Pascagoula. I don't know if he assisted in helping Bounds get his present position. Is he in Bounds corner?
Any word about the Milsaps president...Dr.F.Lucas? Remember, there are those that suggest that A.K.Lucas went along with SFT with an expectation that F.Lucas would follow SFT.
I note that a comment I made a few days back is now out of context. I forgot that posts can be edited. My reply to Alias's original post now looks different, since apparently Alias has edited out--for whatever reason--some of its original "some people believe" comments. Next time I'll quote the relevant portion(s) of the post to which I'm responding so that I can preserve the context.
Aside from some serious personality flaws, Thames' failure to function as a good university president was rooted in his having never been anywhere but USM and his total lack of understanding about how good universities operate. Appointing a new president who is from the Pine Belt, has no degrees from out of state (as I recall), and has spent his career in K-12 education would indicate a level of stupidity that exceeds the capability of even the IHL Board.

JL, Some people do believe that Bounds and the Milsaps Lucas are both closely connected to the Good Ole Boy system via Bud Ginn and others in the Pine Belt.

No surprises there. But since understanding the power system doesn't seem to protect against its ravages, and since the state system has been altered as of the last year or two, and that by someone who stakes his own reputation on the fairness of the search, and moreover since sudden and devastating upsets to corruption seem to be built into the very fabric of reality, I choose to join the Faculty Senate in being cautiously optimistic about the current process.
