HATTIESBURG — A male student was found dead in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Southern Mississippi fraternity house Sunday afternoon.
At this time, there is no suspicion of foul play, said Southern Miss spokeswoman Margie Jepson. She said that the death was an apparent suicide, and the student's parents were notified.
The body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy, and Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said he expected the results back on Tuesday.
Suicide appalls USM; counselors ready Jan 15, 2007 04:20 PM
The University of Southern Mississippi is providing grief counselors for friends shocked by the death of Austin Somers, a 21-year-old member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Friends found Somers dead Sunday night in a room of the fraternity house. School officials say they believe it was a suicide. But they're awaiting an autopsy to confirm that. Results are expected by Tuesday.
According to a fraternity website, Somers is from Wiggins and attended Stone High.
Officials say because of the King holiday, only about three people were living in the fraternity house when Somers was found.
Dean of Students Eddie Holloway says a whole team of counselors will be ready to help when spring semester starts Tuesday.
The young man is the son of one of my wife's oldest friends. He & my daughter were in day care together. He was smart, good looking, well mannered & evidently had problems that none of us imagined. Very sad.
