Within the past day or so somebody posted a technicolor photograph of a large sign at the Theatre and Dance Building. The sign was made by Munn. The narrative accompanying the photo said there would be about five of them. On which thread was that posted?
That's not Michael Jackson. Who is it? What is it? A clown from Barnum & Bailey? A Halloween masquerader? A Mardi Gras celebrator? Are all five signs alike? Don't know what kind of "Campaign" USM has in mind, but it won't appeal to the pocketbooks of the good old boys, that's for sure.

All kidding aside, the sign is rather nice. That particular sign does contain a cultural element and it fits rather well at theatre and performing arts building. Maybe those responsible for this campaign plan to place a different kind of sign over other building. The possibilities are endless. One can imagine the content of a comparable sign placed over polymer science - a man in tuxedo smoking a big cigar with $100 bills protruding upwards from his pockets. Neat!
For some reason, the idea of large signs hanging on the side of campus made me think that Fred Horne had returned. Fred was sort of a "vertical" Night Chalker™ ...
I don't know. I haven't seen it in person, but online it looks rather creepy and scary to me. I have a daughter who is active in the arts and I don't think it would entice her to attend USM. Of course, she's afraid of clowns too.

I think on balance it is actually pretty nice when seen live. The dance figure was drawn from the advertising video made last spring and the made up face from a visiting artist last year.
We didn't actually know this was happening but after getting over the initial suprise it is kind of nice to know that T&D was included in the group of images to go up. According to LM the signs are intended to last two or three years (barring a hurricane coming up from the coast!)

Holy Cow that image does look exactly like Michael Jackson. Does anyone know the cost of these banners and billboards, and what the university hopes to achieve from this exposure? It seems to me this money would have been better spent on faculty raises.
Speaking of money, is the USM Golden Wiener Revelry affair a university expense, is it subsidized by Aramark and the Mississippi Polymer Institute-Sanderson Farms Frankfurter consortium.

OK, I looked again at the image on my super high resolution monitor, and I do see a little of Boy George, also some Marilyn Manson. Viewed under certain lighting conditions, it also bears an uncanny resemblance to published photos of Angeline Dvorak.

Aw, c'mon, AE, those banners brighten things up. And as Stephen Judd pointed out, theatre actually got some recognition. Why, if they'd used the money for raises, it probably wouldn't have amounted to more than $400 a person... Oops.

Mr. Wonderful, I hope your committee will consider merging these two quotes as an entry for the weekly award.
Yes, Mal. I was Moonbeam last week. But things in that microbus got too heavy for me and I had to get out of there and regroup. So as of today I've decided to become much more serious and cerebral and I need a new name that reflects the new me. Do you have any suggestions?#1 Groupie

Luna LucEre would allow for some ease in transition unless you're truly ready to make a clean break from the past. Glad you made it out safely and were able to dump the dead weight. Where are you off to now?
Oh, I do love! It captures the essence of the sophisticated new me! I'd love to tell you where I'm going next, but Mr. Wonderful reads this board and he gets SO TICKY. So I don't like to give him a head's up - I wait til I'm there and then let him know. Thanks for the great name suggestion. Luna aka #1 Groupie

Mal, I've been following your little tete-a-tete. Thank you for trying to help #1 Groupie shake off her past life of the 1960's.
