Oh, does this not help our state image?  A quote from the first story:

Mr. del Corral . . . had completed much of his doctoral work at Louisiana State University but wanted to avoid the hassle of facing a dissertation committee. So he called Lacrosse University, which was based in Louisiana until 2002, when state authorities declined to renew its license. (It is now based in Mississippi.) Lacrosse charges $2,200 for a Ph.D. An admissions counselor told a caller that he could receive a bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, all in less than a year.

. . .

Mr. del Corral never met the person at Lacrosse who reviewed his dissertation. He never talked to the person on the telephone. He never sent him an e-mail message. And he never took a single course. When asked if he thinks Lacrosse is a diploma mill, Mr. del Corral says it probably is. On the other hand, he explains, "it gave me what I needed."

The State of Orgeon seems to have taken the lead on the diploma mill problem, developing an office to determine if a particular degree is legit.

Cut it out with the rude comments already.  I have it from a very reliable source that Mrs. Dr. Angeline Dvorak, J.D. is presently pursuing a second Ph.D. from LaCrosse (they're waiting for her check to clear), and has made the final cut in their nation-wide search for Chancellor. The only sticking point is her  $1 mil salary requirement, and a non-negotiable demand that her better half be retained as University Provost and Risk Manager.

Question for AAUP knowledgeable folks...is this the kind of issue in which AAUP would be interested?...that is, faculty having "degrees" from diploma mills?

I think I got one of those diplomas on the Nom d'aPlomb site. Worked hard for it. Bt it didn't mean a thing when I applied for a job.

I take it you neglected to print the Nom d'Aplomb certificate on photocopy-proof paper with a genuine hologram & heat-sensitive watermark.

Just "duping" the certificate seldom fools most potential employers
