This morning I inadvertently stumbled on a website with which I am unfamilar. It is very well constructed (slicker than even the official USM website) and was evidently updated recently (it highlights the quote "We are proud to be ranked among schools like Alabama and Michigan State in the U.S. News and World Report rankings." In golden letters near the top of what looks like the home page is the statement "Southern Miss is the headquarters of the Economic Development Research Institute, the nation's largest association for economic development professionals." Various other USM "accomplishments" appear such as the statement "Mississippi's most diverse university." At the bottom of the page there is a disclaimer saying something like the site is not an official USM site but was established at some time during 1999. My first thought was that maybe it is something used for athletic recruiting in lieu of the official USM website but that is probably not correct. In any case, here it is:
Nice site, but needs some updating. For instance, the touted "College of Fine Arts" (College of Arts) is no more. Interesting that after PolySci the next two famous programs are in COAL.
Maybe it was constructed to present a message to some specific audience without the distractions that appear on www.usm.edu Play the Alma Mater which is at the top right corner. Quite a moving version.

One of the most interesting things is that the Department of Polymer Science is the only USM department linked to that website. The various colleges are linked, but only one department: polymer science.

There s is at the very bottom in white letters....says this website is GoldenEagles.net and not officially affiliated with USM...just for enjoyment of Southern Miss supporters...or some such.

A very nice site. And a commendable goal. No doubt about that. But it would be nice if that USM/Alabama/Michigan State misinterpretation of the US News data were deleted. Whoever put the site together probably had no way of knowing that it was merely a spin.
With the exception of the US News quote it does present USM in a positive way as we were back in 1999. It even mentioned the New York Times Book Review which named the USM Writers Program among the top 10. Things have sure changed at USM during the past two years.
The private GoldenEagle site evidently does make an immensely positive impact as evidenced by a scanning of their visitors registration. In light of what has happened at USM during the past two years I almost weap when I read these enthusiastic comments made by visitors to their site . . . . . .
can't wait for this fall when I start at Southern Miss. Everything I have seen tells me that my life will change for the better in many, many ways. Thanks for the information.
