While I read Mr. Shepard's letter as sarcastic, Mr. Klumb may not have the intellectual wherewithal to understand sarcasm. He may very well read it as a supportive letter. In fact, Mr. Shepard's letter may indeed be supportive of Klumb. We do not know.
It would be far better if people wrote simple, straightforward letters regarding Klumb or not write anything at all. Humor, sarcasm, irony & complex sentence structure are not going to work with the president of the IHL board, because he doesn't understand them, simple as that.

Sure he thinks abstractly. Otherwise, how would he have been able to write that Compendium on John Donne?
