Post Info TOPIC: Donne conference gone from USM

Donne conference gone from USM
Permalink Closed

I just received notice about the forthcoming annual meeting of the John Donne Society, which will take place this coming year at LSU.  I believe that this means that for the first time since the Society was founded two decades ago, the conference will NOT occur at the Gulf Coast campus of USM, which was always a splendid place to meet.  The annual meetings of the Society in Gulfport helped attract wonderful international attention to USM; the loss of the conference is just one more sign of USM's decreased standing in the international academic community.  I say this with real sorrow.  USM has just fallen a bit lower on the radar screen.  Thanks again, Shelby!

Hey, I don't have anything to say. I'm just competing for this week's Nom d'Plume Award. The The thread announcing the John Done departure from USM seemed to be an approriate place to place my entry.

Well, I have something to say...this makes me so sad.  Another casualty of SFT's ego run amok.  He's just determined to keep USM in the 4th tier, I suppose.

Are you certain the next John Donne Society meeting will be held at LSU? I recently heard a rumor that it'll be hosted by Roy Klumb at his palatial estate in Point Clear, Alabama. After all, Klumb is a known fancier of Donne's works. Surely you recall his comment when asked why he'd finally agreed to serve on the IHL..."To be no part of any body, is to be nothing."

Duly noted. Although Miss Information tends not to like such blatant pandering for the award, I thought it was appropriate. However, in the interest of fairness, I will disqualify my own entry here, even if there are fans of the reverend in the "Kudzu" comic strip out there.

Shelby's Agenda: Could It Be Donne?

Surely you are not referring to the Klumb who edited and wrote the preface to the four-volume seminal work called Klumb's Compendium of John Donne: The Early Years - 1986-1996.

Although it's been donne before, I do like the grouping theme.

Reviewer,

If you refer to the Klumb works published by the noted Ashland Community and Technical College Academic Press of Kentucky, indeed you are correct. I understand the USM Barnes & Noble bookstore has just received a shipment of his new primer entitled "Klumb's Donne for Dummies." An on-campus personal appearance and booksigning event is being planned by Ms. Mader. Stay tuned for details from Gurunuberg.

Well darn, I missed seeing their office when I was there. It must have been on the Technology campus. Or maybe it is in Lexington--are you perhaps confusing it with University of Kentucky Press? (I have seen that.) I didn't know that ACTC had a press. It must have been founded after Angie left, otherwise she probably would have used it to print money.

I think the reason you missed their office is because the ACTC press is not a brick-and-mortar facility. It is online.

I thought that maybe it was called Vanity Press.

Reviewer,

Thank you; you are too kind. I'll try to be more attentive to this board, now that I'm home for a while. Maybe I'll get to meet some of you folks soon, if I can somehow wrangle an invitation to Mr. Klumb's booksigning extravaganza at the Hub. Or has it been moved to Reed Green?
