"Southern Miss Chemistry Professor Chairs Science Conference in Maine"

Pojman is the first professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry to ever chair a Gordon Research Conference and only the second one from Southern Miss.

"UPSET Manufacturer Unhappy Over Turmoil in Area Development Partnership"

Of most concern to the company is the instability at ADP. ... Referring to the original plan established between the ADP and his company, Dendiu (Executive VP of Marketing and Public Affairs for Oralbotics) said, "My concern now, in looking back, is that this thing is falling between the cracks."

"Lott Center Bid Opening Tuesday"

Some sources have suggested the cost of the Center could reach as much as $16 millio at today's prices for labor and materials and with the completion of the top two floors to be delayed until a later date, which could add to the total cost of construction.

The University of Southern Mississippi was selected as the site for the Center, being named in honor of U.S. Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, because USM is the only university in the country offering graduate degrees in economic development.

A lie surrounded by truth gives credibility to the lie and taints the truth.

No, USM was selected as the site for the center because somebody in the Dome is a friend of Trent Lott's.  It's all about who you know and what they can do for you.

What an insane statement above.

Interesting that the HA coverage of two of these stories (the latter two) lagged behind The Independent by almost a week.  Also interesting that the first story doesn't seem to appear on the USM press release page.  Is it perhaps because the name of the scholar is similar to one that appears on a certain petition?

From the American Heritage Dictionary:

insane:  Very foolish; absurd.

And this from Merriam-Webster:

insane:  Characterized by insanity or the utmost folly; chimerical; unpractical; as, an insane plan, attempt, etc

I stand by my word choice.

I just don't understand why reporters accept such statements at face value.  All it takes is a Google search to see that North Texas, Wayne State, and no telling how many others, offer graduate degrees in economic development.  There might be all kinds of ways of distinguishing the graduate degrees offered by USM from the others, but on its face, it is dead wrong.

And write one to The Independent, too, while you're at it!

Of all the lies and all the spin, this is the one that bothers me the most because it forms the very foundation of the house of cards.
