Mlle de Guerre was in an unusually good mood after she read the initial article in this thread. When I inquired as to her ebullient spirits, it transpires that she feels that the IHL at long last is seeking the proper qualities in a President for our beloved university. Mlle. thinks "passionate but sensitive" is an important set of qualities, to which she would add, "uses the correct fork, grammar, and pronunciation; is in the mid-fifties to mid-sixties, male, unmarried, enjoys classical music; does not wish to take long walks on any beach; has independent and well-mannered children if any; is honest, forthright, kind, and has an excellent sense of humour."
Somewhat surprised, I asked Mlle. just what she thought we were seeking -- a new Gentleman Caller or a University President? Apparently she doesn't see a problem. She seemed to think that as long as a nationwide search was being undertaken, why not look at the whole picture? (Mlle. does have a certain economising streak, in spite of our expenditures for champagne, chocolate and caviar.) But what, I asked, if the new president is a lady? In that case, she informed me, we should be very careful to see that she has a very nice brother or cousin.
I think a strong cup of tea is in order.
Good day.

edited to remove a most unfortunate faux pas -- orientation is only important to M. de G's personal search, not to the University's.
Southern Miss is seeking a president in a particularly active recruitment season, Greenwood said - Ohio State, Purdue, George Washington and three other universities have openings in the top job this year, she said.
Be perfectly honest, people. The people who will be serious candidates for the CEO positions at Ohio State, Purdue, or George Washington aren't likely to bother applying at USM. If any of us think otherwise, we flatter ourselves unduly.
I still believe the excuses being floated for the "secret search" process are utterly bogus. In Florida, a "secret search" process would be illegal. I don't see Florida institutions having problems hiring top administrators. Open search processes are not the real reason that there aren't great pools of applicants for higher education administration jobs in Mississippi. Again, failing to admit the real reason we flatter ourselves unduly.

But Vic ------ we can now give out a press release saying how honored we are to be mentioned in an article with such heavy hitters as Ohio State and Purdue. I think that was Mader's reaction (obviously told by Shelboo) to the drop in rankings a few years back!!!!!!!!!!!!
