PREFERRED PRESIDENTIAL PROFILE
THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

OVERVIEW
The Southern Miss Alumni Association began a process in June 2005 to create a
positive environment for the selection of a new University president. The
Presidential Transition Team was later appointed and began work to seek input
from 14 major constituent groups to determine the needs and desires of the
Southern Miss family. This profile was built upon the feedback offered from all
constituent groups and is an attempt to describe the ideal presidential candidate
that would meet the expressed needs of the University as garnered through this
process.

SOUTHERN MISS PRESIDENTIAL SKILLS, STRENGTHS AND ATTRIBUTES
Academic Credentials & Background
It is crucial that the new president have a demonstrated relationship to higher
education. While there is preference for an academic background rooted in the
traditional education process, it is essential that there be an established
understanding of how university processes work coupled with a demonstrated
leadership of multi-functional organizations. A Ph.D., or comparable terminal
degree, is preferred.

Leadership Skill Set
It is vital that the new president have skills that are overtly and easily visible in
the areas of sound fiscal management, consensus building, planning, delegation,
decision making, goal setting, private fundraising and communication.

Leadership & Communication Style
While no particular leadership style will exclude a candidate’s consideration, it is
believed that the new president should have a collaborative leadership style
coupled with firm conviction. The individual should have a vision for the future of
the University and the ability to communicate that vision to a wide range of
audiences. To maximize potential, it is necessary that the new president be a good
listener, seek participative solutions, create a shared vision, excite the Southern
Miss community toward common goals and implement plans with urgency and
passion. The leadership style should demonstrate integrity, appropriate
delegation and an understanding of the ever-changing role of higher education.

General
The new president must demonstrate a sincere appreciation for The University of
Southern Mississippi and be willing to take the actions necessary to build upon
the University’s already strong foundation. He or she must have a heart for
students and an awareness of the opportunity to make an immediate, significant
impact. An appreciation for the importance of the Gulf Coast campus restoration,
the positive economic and quality-of-life outlook for South Mississippi and the
expectations of the Southern Miss family are essential. The University needs a
dynamic person who will unite students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community
around a common vision; who will generate the resources necessary to achieve
that vision; who will enhance the institution’s solid academic programs; who will
surround himself or herself with capable individuals to help lead the institution;
and who will represent the University with the utmost pride and professionalism.

I have a dumb question.  While I do understand the importance of the president of any university having a background in academia, wouldn't requiring a PhD or a comparable terminal degree put you right in the same boat?  I mean, wouldn't that person have their "pet college"?  You are dealing with that with Shelby, and yet...............  I don't understand totally.


I do agree that it is important that the president understand how academia works and all, however, I personally feel that a good president is going to enlist people who have a strong background in academia and listen to them.  Which is something you don't have right now.  Help me understand why you want someone to have a strong background in academia when you run the risk of finding yourselves in the same situation you are already in.  (Minus the daughter- whom from what I read here is totally inept at what she does).

Well, they didn't ask me, but I didn't expect to be asked. I quit paying dues about six years ago for reasons I've explained here before. But they didn't ask any of the dues-paying alumni I know, either. I guess one still has to contribute mucho pesos to have an opinion...

Well, actually a survey went out in the Talon so there was an attempt to survey dues paying alums.

I'd like to hope that that might represent the general past disorganization of the alumni association but . . . . My perception is that the current group is a lot more open and energetic. Bob Pierce solicited involvement from faculty senate (we had some senators who contributed ideas) on both the list of questions to go out and also some of the characteristics.


So . . . if they haven't put you off too much I'd suggest that a communication of dissatisfaction from you is more likely to yield some tangible result (and I hope an apology) than might have been the case previously.


Anyway . . . . since I am teachng here I'm unhappy to lose good alums and particularly a colleague in Higher Ed.

Rest assured that regardless of what I may or may not do with respect to being an "active dues paying card carrying USM alumni association member," I am now & will continue to be more active with respect to the University of Southern Mississippi than I have ever been. Although I'm cautious as hell about the Secret Search Process™ I'm optimistically so.

Although I still don't trust Dr. Meredith any farther than I could pitch him, some interesting things are happening at the board staff level that I think could really make a difference for all of higher ed in Mississippi. If the Secret Search Process™ finds the right person to be the next prez at USM, there could be some majorly terrific things happening in the next few years!
