"Q: Were you surprised by the strong reaction to "Pillow Talk"?
A: The worst thing about journalism is that you never hear from anyone until they hate you.
I knew when we did "Pillow Talk," some people would like it and some wouldn't. I just wish we had become ultra-popular through some other means - not that I don't appreciate the feedback, but I seriously, honestly did not expect it to be this big of a deal.
A lot of college papers have sex columns, and even though this is the Bible Belt and we're in the Deep South, these are things students are talking about. I realize this is about a larger social fear, because this has been one of the few remaining places in America where "progressive" thinking - and I mean that in the dirty-word sense people apply to that word - had not yet become part of our way of life.
But Wal-Mart has choices in its DVD section that are more "offensive" than anything in "Pillow Talk."
