Once again not meaning to put words or Aunt Bee's pickles in Opie's mouth, but I suspect "he" is hanging around because we pay attention to "him" & very few other people do. From what "he" said about students & tests, it's obvious that "his" students -- if in fact there have ever really been any -- don't pay much attention to "him."

What they really want to do is continute hate us. This is a painful realization for me. I don't think I've ever experienced this level of out and out, blatant hatred. And mostly, I continue to be confused. What have I done to the people of Mississippi except try to educate their children to the best of my ability? Why am I such a threat? What is so at risk for them that they must revile me? Obviously I am "other" to them--does this mean that the educated are the "other?" Is this actually about class, not education? Stephen Judd pointed out that the faculty at USM don't typically come from upper-class backgrounds (but it seems we are perceived this way)... University faculty status affords relatively well-paid, relatively autonomous and satisfying, and relatively secure work in a generally pleasant environment. The majority of Mississippians (Americans) work in jobs that are poorly paid, unfulfilling, and insecure. Joe and Jane Citizen don't "hate" faculty as much as they envy them and covet their superior working conditions. "
It's odd that physicians and ministers aren't lucky enough to be envied in the same way by the locals. As a USM faculty member who toiled in blue collar work for years before earning the Ph.D., I can tell you that I often miss having my nights and weekends off, and having a low stress job that can be left on the construction site at 5 PM ain't so bad either.

One thing that may help you work through troll postings is the realization that -- irrespective of our actual ages -- most of us trolls are just bellignorant children. You might picture a room full of adults engaged in conversation into which wanders a teenager sporting a moustache that has obviously been drawn on with mascara. The teen thinks he has fooled everyone in the room, but he has deceived no one. He effects behavior that he believes to be adult; and the harder that he tries, the more juvenile he acts.
I doubt whether most of us troll posters really represent much of the community at large. I think the parents who send their children to USM appreciate the education the students receive. I think the students who seek education find it. No doubt there are exceptions to this generalization, and no doubt there are students who have schooling forced on them and find that their education is minimal.
Most of us who post as trolls had mediocre educational experiences. We believe that there are more important things than an education; indeed, we believe the only important aspect to education is that it might lead to greater income. Hence, we believe in the great significance of the good grades that were wrongfully denied us.
We believe that successful students were just lucky sycophants, who curried favor with capricious teachers. We believe that there was merit and honor in our absolute refusal to ask questions, to make an appointment to consult a professor, or engage in any other activity that we would describe as just "kissing up" or "brown-nosing."
In short, we blame you for our failings. That puts you in the good company of God.

This is as good a post as I've read here this week. And the quote above should be duly noted by Mr. Wonderful.
(The post isn't just about trolls. It hits to the heart of a lot of questions that have been asked on this board since its inception.)
But since Mouthbreather classifies him/herself as a "troll," I feel compelled to award it a "perfect 10."

This sounds like Shelby himself (and Angie Dvorak)! . . . . . . In short, we blame you for our failings. That puts you in the good company of God."
Thank you. I can assure have never been put in such high-level company before.
I might add that the IDOT trolls don't bother me (especially with the new rating system in place!). It was all those letters to the paper--so public, so awful. If my next door neighbor came to me and said, "Things are really bad at work. The boss keeps screwing up, he's fired two fabulous employees, and he won't listen to anybody. Everyone is so depressed, and everybody is job hunting . . ." I would listen and be sympathetic, no matter if my neighbor was a business person or a construction worker or a lawyer or whatever. But somehow, because we are _professors_ we aren't allowed to express any of those sentiments. People would say to me "we're just sick about what's happening at the University"--but they never wrote the papers and said, "hey, lay off the faculty." After awhile it got very hard to take. I always felt like Hattiesburg was a friendly community, but unfortunately I left with somewhat of a bad taste in my mouth.

Mal is pretty firm about discounting the "troll patroll" aliases because there are just so many of them. I quit arguing about it when Mal started snatching the antimacassars off the wing-back chairs in my parlor & slinging them like lacy frisbees around the room. Vict tried to explain it away as too much dewberry brandy, but I saw right away that Mal had a temper with which I didn't want to trifle.

I guess that means my entry has been discounted also.
