Former University of Southern Mississippi professor Frank Glamser, who retired after President Shelby Thames attempted to fire him and another professor in 2004, spoke on campus Friday for the first time since the end of a court-ordered two-year moratorium on public discussion of the controversy....
Glamser said professors define and distinguish universities.
"A university is not the buildings, it's not the administrators, in a sense it's not even the students because they turn over every four years," he said. "The faculty have the responsibility to speak up. The faculty is the university."
"I think given the turnover in faculty since Dr. Thames took over, we've lost so many senior faculty that its good for our new faculty to know about these things."
Myron Henry, Faculty Senate President, attended Glamser's speech and said it was not only timely but needed among the university community.
"I think it was important for us to see the real Frank Glamser again with the kind of status he has and not forget the sacrifice he made on behalf of all faculty," Henry said. "It shows us he's stood tall through these years and created other chapters in his life."
