WRAP-UPS Quick, name a university LA MONICA EVERETT-HAYNES Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle
When a sampling of area executives was asked during a recent survey to name a state university, less than half named the University of Houston.
No executive or community leader named the University of Houston-Victoria, one of the system's four universities.
"This cannot be representative," said Morgan Dunn O'Connor, the board's vice chairwoman. "No one there knows of UH-Victoria?"
The University of Houston, which is in the midst of a major marketing campaign, hired a firm to conduct surveys to learn how the "positioning campaign" is working.
Among the findings, 60 percent of off-campus contacts thought the system was one university — not four independent colleges.
The survey did find respondents think the system is diverse, offers a wide range of programs, is reasonably priced and excels in research and science.
