What's the deal with the makeup of the missed Thursday night classes due to football games?  I heard that the missed classes will meet on Fridays instead.  Isn't that just asking for chaos?  Is this S.O.P.?

CLASS SCHEDULING FOR THURSDAY NIGHT

FOOTBALL GAMES - HATTIESBURG CAMPUS

Fall Semester Thursday Football Games: September 16, 2004, and October 7, 2004

Hattiesburg campus lecture and laboratory classes during both of the Golden Eagles' Thursday night football games this season have been rescheduled to accommodate participation in both nationally televised events.

All lecture classes after 2:15 p.m. and laboratory classes after 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 16 and Thursday, October 7 have been rescheduled for
the following Fridays, September 17 and October 8, respectively. Specific makeup times are to be determined by instructors and professors. Classes
at the Gulf Coast campuses will meet as scheduled on these two Thursdays.

The university is asking that all automobiles in reserved parking locations on campus be removed by 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 16 and Thursday,

October 7. The university will allow open parking up to 12:15 p.m. on both dates, after which time reserved lots will be cordoned off. Automobiles will be allowed to leave those designated areas, but will not be allowed to enter after 12:15 p.m. without the proper decal.

Maps with designated parking areas will be provided to faculty, staff and students at a later date. For more information about parking, contact 266-4944 or 266-4947.

Administrative offices will close on the Hattiesburg campus at noon on bothThursdays, September 16 and October 7. All administrative offices at the Gulf Coast campuses will be open on September 16 and October 7. However, on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, administrative offices on the Gulf Coast campuses will be closed for Mardi Gras, while Hattiesburg offices will remain open on this date. If you have any questions, please call the Office of the Provost at (601) 266-5002.

Well, that is certainly the way to increase unity across campuses!

At the end of the memo where it reads "Call the Provost", who do you think will answer?

Maybe the USM football program belongs only to the Hattiesburg campus? For their enjoyment only. Maybe the Gulf Coast students and faculty can watch it in big screen TV.

But even that, evidently not on Thursday evenings...

Enough frustration about the coast's second class status and we'll see new meaning to "the South will rise again"!

What about students who already have classes all day on Fridays?

I'm not picking any fights with you Phoenix, I'm just responding to your question.

Most Friday classes end before the 2:30pm time posted in the memo.  Friday at 2:30pm is the traditional time for departmental/faculty meetings.  I don't agree about having students return on Friday afternoon to make up a missed class on Thursday, but the administration had to respond to this question that came up from last year.

Thanks for responding to my question, Green Hornet. I appreciate the information.  I didn't realize 2:30 was the magic number for most on campus.  Unfortunately, I teach in a USM Dept where some students have class on Thursdays and until 5:30 on Fridays, and Meetings are held on Mondays.
