Man, I'm so old, I remember when the nice ladies in the cafeteria would spoon out the food that they had made with their own hands on to your plate.
This, in addition to the idea that you would be lent your textbooks for a semester, was one of the things that made USM education cost effective, as well as optimal for southerners.
Now, USM sells everything off to the highest bidder. Let me tell you this, the cost of chicken fingers at Chick-fil-a is going to be a lot more expensive than the cost of chicken fingers at Seymours.
But who cares? USM gets to pocket part of the profit, and so does ARAMARK. To hell with passing the savings on to the student.
Gee, it's hard being a socialist these days...
As for the repaving of everything, I have a grand idea for the parking problem: prohibit freshmen cars on campus. This would force many of the students to spend weekends in the Burg, which would mean additional services would have to be provided. It also means that freshmen would get acclimated to being out of the womb quicker.
I digress...

Maybe Truth4USM/AH can say whether this is still the case at Vanderbilt. I know it was in the '70s.
Miles Long is right: in addition to saving the streets & conserving precious parking spaces, it would indeed help USM overcome the "suitcase college" malaise that translates into less-than-enthusiastic alumni.

You know, I don't really know. I work with faculty, so I'm not in touch with the rules for students so much. I do know that parking on the University side (as opposed to the Medical side) is virtually non-existant. There's really only parking on the perimeters of campus (and in a few large parking garages on the outskirts of the university). As a result, it's really a beautiful campus.
Not allowing frosh to have cars on campus is a good idea in theory, but they are not in a town with decent public transportation. How would they get to church, go to restaurants, shop, etc?
Most big universities that ban student cars from central campus areas provide some kind of transportation system, often in cooperation with the local city bus system. It's not really fair to do one without the other.

Two situations to think about re: this plan:
1. Non traditional aged freshman students- 25+ with families... (we have quite a few on campus...GI bill, Nursing, etc)
2. As a USM faculty member (No raises in 4 years) who has a freshman, and 3 other children, I cannot afford to pay for dorms and food for her, so I vote no on this. What would help are distant lots (free) on the periphery with shuttles (for everyone- including faculty and staff.)
The shuttle idea makes a lot of sense. I would be willing to ride it, as opposed to spending 30 min circling campus looking for a place, or getting to campus at "oh-dark thirty" to park.
