I've read that the Army has been contracting for large numbers of apartments in Hattiesburg because of the Camp Shelby build up for training Iraq bound troops. Has this caused any problems for incoming faculty and students, or has the apartment building boom kept pace with demand?
I know a member of the staff who cannot find affordable housing on her USM salary. She has been looking for over a month. And many of the places she asked about were already taken. So I do think there has been an impact.
Someone on the old board asked a related question and I don't remember the answer. Seems it was framed differently...more like, with all the people leaving USM and leaving the area is it hard to sell real estate. I remember the topic but not the discussion, does anyone?
I believe it was Otherside discussing the USM departures with someone whose name I don't remember. The question was if many were leaving it should create a buyers market. At that time the military was not in the picture.
The Hattiesburg American recently had a couple of articles suggesting that if students didn't already have housing they will experience difficulty finding any this fall.
