I realize that it is not accurate to say that Shelby terminated Stringer and Glamser, but it is appropriate to suggest that Thames' actions/behavior hastened their departures from USM.  That said, the kicker is that they landed jobs at Texas A&M and Tulane.

If this is a trend, then when Thames forces Bower out, JB could find himself (in a few years) running out with the Maize and Blue of Michigan to "Hail the Victors" before 100,000 in the Big House as they prepare to take on Ohio State for the Rose Bowl berth.  Meanwhile, back at The Rock, Shelby is congratulating USM coach Parker Dykes for ending USM's 3-yr. losing streak to La-Lafayette via a last second field goal.

Wouldn't this be just grand?

Parker Dykes is a outstanding coach. He had successes at JCJC, at Hinds JC and, before that, at two respectable 4-year out-state-universities.

So Eaglegate...... are you saying we would be better off without Bower????? I would think those in the Eagle Club and fans of USM would support Bower more (in the media) rather than let SFT run him off.

I didn't take Eaglegate's post as a slam against Dykes. In fact, I thought it just underscored the whole idea that Thames seems to regard JCJC as a worthy model for USM.

Doesn't Thames pretty much consider himself a Jones County resident in exile on Jamestown Road?

Invictus, I too did not see it as a slam against Dykes, who I'm sure is a fine individual and a good coach, I just think we should keep Bower.

Hi Green Hornet,

You are most definitely one of the posters with whom I do not wish to get into a disagreement. With Seeker - yes. With Green Hornet - no. And thank you, Invictus, for intervening as would Henry Clay, aka the Great Peacemaker. But I did feel as if I stepped into a den of rattlesnakes when I made that brief 24-word posting which basically said, in matter-of-fact language, that Parker Dykes is an outstanding coach with good.experience. I said nothing about Jeff Bower. Now that I am part of this discussion, however, I will give my opinion: It would distress me greatly if the Eagle Club, or any other USM athletic body, including the good ol' boys, put sufficient pressure on Thames to cause him to trash Bower. It was bad enough when similar pressure from such groups evidently led to an adverse decision regarding President Horace Fleming. Jeff Bower could do better than USM. Much better. And so could Parker Dykes. Not only are those two men outstanding coaches, they both have a great deal of integrity. I have one final comment: You seem to think that my handle, Eaglegate, refers in some way to the Eagle Club or to something akin to that. That is not the case at all. EAGLEGATE is a takeoff on WATERGATE. Eaglegate is USM's Watergate.

I like the Eaglegate name - figured it had to do with Watergate. You know, there are a lot of us academic types that love sports. I certainly do. Bower will go to the Top - we'll see him at a much better program than this place.

Ha ha! Keep it up, Eaglegate & I'll have to follow USM policy by nominating you for the Nom d'Aplomb award.

I keep waiting for SFT to say, "Well, I am not a crook"...

Shaft, Eaglegate is an academic type that loves sports too. Especially college football and basketball. Eaglegate held season tickets (basketball & football) at USM, attended USM baseball games, women's basketball games, and is a former Eagle Club member. Eaglegate actually once held more season tickets than there were members in his family. While growing up as a child,  Eaglegate used to play sandlot football with a person who later became head football coach at Ole Miss. Eaglegate had to go to the orthodontist more than once to get his braces adjusted after such sandlot encounters, and to the regular dentist on two occasions to tend to a chipped tooth. But Eaglegate has his athletic priorities in the right place: The athletic powers should not be allowed to run the academic side of a university. I concur with your assessment that Jeff Bower will go to the Top, and that "we'll see him in a much better program than this place." But if that occurs, it should occur because he he wants to go - not because some athletic supporters who think they own the university put pressure on the president to force him to go.

NO QUARTER

In complete agreement with you, Eaglegate.  Shaft's assessment of this is that SFT is so delusional that he hasn't figured out the repercussions of running out a competent and outstanding coach. This decision will involve even more of a public outcry than his extremely poor decision concerning Texas A & M and Tulane bound profs.

You have to be crazy to think the University of Michigan would ever hire Jeff Bower.  Thanks for the laugh.

I hear you, Shaft. A public outcry following dismissal of an outstanding football coach might indeed lead to an administrative change at USM - even more than the abuse of outstanding faculty members. I do hope that Bower would not be subjected to anything like that. One thing I do not understand, and a topic which I have not seen addressed on this message board, is why some people, who profess to want a change in USM administration, appear to be serving as enablers.

Eaglegate,

I apologize for thinking you were anti-Bower.  Although not a member of the Eagle Club, I am a season ticket holder in Football and have seen first-hand what a first class individual that Jeff Bower is.  In no way did I take your comments about Dykes as being a slam, but forgive me for assuming your comments were voicing support for SFT efforts to remove JB.  Thank you Invictus for interceding on Eaglegate's behalf.  It's not easy to tell friend from foe.  I hope we (those who contribute to the board) have additional input/comments from Eaglegate.  As for "SHAFT"  I agree, Bower can do better at another institution, and we need to keep our faculty and staff (coaches included) at USM.  It's going to be hard to do this with this present administration.

As for "Funny"  many a coach has left and gone on to better and "bigger" things.  Bower has the ability to "coach" at a larger institution (even Michigan!!)

Eaglegate, please share your thoughts on the "enablers" concept.  I would like to hear more.

Green Hornet,

When I in elementary school, my mother was taking me to the dentist one day when we stopped at a five-and-dime store to kill some time prior to the appointment. When we arrived at the dentist's office, my mother spotted a red balloon in my hand as we were riding up the elevator. She asked where and how I got the balloon, and I told her F.W. Woolworths. I honestly thought those balloons were free for the taking. My mother immediately cancelled the dental appointment, took me by the ear and walked me all the way back to the five-and-dime store, had me identify the location of the balloons, and required that I present the balloon to the clerk and tell the clerk precisely what I had done. My mother was most definitely not an enabler. She did not "cover up" for me. She did not make excuses for me. She was not an enabler. She did not enable me to think that I could go through life simply taking what I wanted, when I wanted it, with no regard to how I got it.

I've been out of the loop lately, but has there been some news about F. Glamser going to Tulane?

Yes, Dr. Glamser has apparently accepted a position with Tulane's Gulf Coast campus.  Does anyone know where that campus is located?  And how long until Shelby talks about how USM's reputation is getting out, we're worl' class, I wish Frank Glamser the best, I never meant to financially harm him or his family, blah blah blah blah....

if you do a google search on the gulf coast tulane campus, it's interesting to see how tulane students react to it.  they see it as a lowering of tulane standards.

Please don't confuse the coast branch with the real Tulane.

Look, the whole point of this is that SFT made everyone believe that Frank and Gary had done something so incredibly wrong (criminal, even!) that not only was he going to fire them from USM, but that their academic careers would be over.  Obviously, other universities have weighed in on this notion, and have rejected SFT's bumbling assessment of the situation.  Frank and Gary have gone on to greener pastures.  The loss is USM's.

Why the hell would Tulane students care about the coast branch?  A vast majority of Tulane students aren't even from Louisiana or Mississippi anyway - most seem to be a bunch of rich kids from Chicago, New York, Dallas, etc.  From what I gather, most people in New Orleans and the rest of Louisiana (especially LSU people) could give a rat's a$$ about what Tulane students think about just about anything - New Orleans people just want them to leave their Dad's money and not tear up the city too bad at Mardi Gras....

since students attending the Edgewater Mall campus get a Tulane degree, they see it as an open admissions campus, watering down their degrees.  I agree, but I'm just reporting what was in the "hullabaloo" (tulane student newspaper?).

Actually, the whole debate over Tulane's "University College," which is essentially open admissions, goes back over 60 years to the founding of University College.

I don't know if they still have it, but at one time Harvard had a University College too. As I recall, there was something on the official transcript by which one could tell if a student was from their University College. I learned this when, at another institution, we once admitted one to our graduate program. Quite a surprise.
