Gnome Fact #3

Because the Gnome is closely associated with Trolls who often reside in close proximity, it is important that one be familiar with demographic and other information about the Troll and the Troll's relationship to the Gnome.

Distribution Area: Trolls are found primarily in Norway, Sweeden, Finland, Russia, Siberia, and on Internet Message Boards in the USA.

Characteristics: Trolls are stupid, primitive, distrustful, and unbelievably ugly creatures. They have noses like cucumbers, and a tail. They are horribly strong and fast, and they stink. They often keep boxes full of money and jewels, with which they play for hours, running their fingers through them. Their hair is filthy. Fortunately, beyond his cave, the Troll has no power over the Gnome. Besides, the Gnome is much more clever. Trolls, however, are not loyal creatures: If a Troll happens to catch a Gnome . . .Well, that's a story for another day.

And that, my friends, is a Gnome Fact.

Source of this Information:  One of the chief sources of information is Wilhelm J. Wunderlich's bulky treatsie De Hominibus Parvissimis (Concerning the Wee People) published in in 1580. That information has been included in the book by Wil Nuygen (writer) and Rien Poortvliet's (illustrator) entitled Gnomes (Harry N. Abrams, Publisher, 1977) from which most, but not all, of these Gnome Facts are taken.

Does this help us understand why trolls seem to work for The Gnome?

Indeed they do seem to work for The Gnome. But that is in appearance only.Trolls work only for themselves, selfish little critters they are. Nuygen and Poorveleit are very clear on that issue: "Sometimes the trolls make a gnome dance attached to a chain. or put him on a treadmill . . ." Further, "In almost every case . . . the gnome succeeds in escaping . . . either through his own ingenuity or with outside help."

This explains a lot of things. Thanks.
