SouthernMiss.net Offering Internet Access, E-mail Accounts
The Southern Miss Alumni Association has reached an agreement with Hattiesburg-based telecommunications company Megagate Broadband that will allow Mississippi residents an opportunity to order Internet service with a Southern Miss affinity while at the same time benefiting the association.
Alumni, friends, faculty, students and fans of the university who live in the state will be able to order a number of services through Megagate, including dial-up Internet service. Also available are SouthernMiss.net e-mail addresses and Eagle VoIP. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that allows the user to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular phone line. A portion of all sales will benefit the alumni association. As Megagate’s operations expand, the service will be extended to areas outside of Mississippi.
The services coincide with the launch of Southernmiss.net, an Internet portal through which SouthernMiss.net dial-up Internet users will access the web. The portal will contain links to national news and sports headlines, as well as university and alumni association news and Golden Eagle athletics.
“Southernmiss.net will provide an avenue for Golden Eagles to access the Internet, and help direct users to the other web services already provided by the university and alumni association,” said Jerry DeFatta, the alumni association’s associate director for external affairs. “SouthernMiss.net is one more way for alumni, friends and Golden Eagle fans to demonstrate their loyalty to the university.”
