Isn't there an internal governance committee at the university level that would normally deal with a program change of this magnitude?  How thin are the various faculty committees getting?...

"

Yes, they would be the CoST Curriculum Committee and the Academic Council. Both of which reviewed the requested changes and approved them.

Stinky,

I guess I was being too subtle in trying to make a point.I should have pointed out that, in the past, I witnessed undergraduate recuriting practices which can be described as nothing short of shameful. I once almost walked out of a high school recruiting session to which I had been sent.

i think my point, maybe too subtle as well, with the definitions was that forensics may be an appropriate title.  the word science with forensics may be redundant.

Ouch! Stinky, do you think that Polymer Science may be redundant too?

Curious II and Stinky Cheese man, if such a mistake were made, that wouldn't change the fact that the student was at a worl' class university with lots of worl' class programs from which to choose, including forensic science.

I'm biased, of course, but I agree that students with a background in forensics (debate) are generally bright enough to know the difference between debate & criminal investigation.

Still, it is monumentally confusing when the "forensics" program at one of the other IHL "sister institutions" includes links to the coaching staff & team roster at their website. Intriguingly, their forensics program is under the auspices of the Lott Leadership Institute.

So, USM gets a "Lott Institute" & a "forensics" program. We're hot on the heels of Ole Miss, I guess

Invictus,

I recall that USM once announced it was establishing or had established a program to train bailbondsmen. Do you know if USM still (to use your phrase) "rules the roost" for that program? If so, will the bailbondsmen program be housed over there with the sciences?

This might have been something associated with the police academy program run at the coast campus. That program regularly trains Mississippi police officers.

Sort of a dual-major, huh? Train them as policemen to "put them in" during regular hours, and moonlight as bailbondsmen to "get them out" during off-hours. I'm just kidding, of course. Seriously, it was my understanding that the program was to be Hattiesburg-based and under the aegis of criminal justice. But I may be wrong.
