I believe that the best predictor of graduate school success in my field is motivation. I've seen Harvard graduates with astromically high GRE's bomb out. I've seen Hodunk State College graduates who have marginal GRE scores go on to make significant contributions to the discipline. Motivation can be assessed, in part, through the extent that the prospecitve student has demonstrated in the past that he or she was a "self-starter."
