I was starting to think about endowing a scholarship. I know nothing about the new chair/president, but most of the rest of the list makies me reluctant.

There are lots of folks on the foundation board. Like any other group of that size, there will be the greater and lesser among them.
If you are truly interested in establishing an endowed scholarship, but do not wish to use the USM Foundation, other means are available. Talk to an estate planning attorney or a bank trust officer about setting up a trust, or look for a community foundation in your area. There are community foundations in Jackson, Meridian, Hattiesburg and on the Gulf Coast.
Many community foundations charge 1 percent or less to administer charitable funds. Someone else may know for sure, but I believe the USM Foundation charges 2 percent.
