I thought the program was fairly well done. It made it clear that personal responsibility was an important component in the outcomes of the students. It was made clear that this was not unique to Jackson, Mississippi and that many other cities had identical problems. Only at the end did I see the moderator fall into the theme that "the issue is still racism".

I just finished a book by Shelby Steele called White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era. It comes from a much different perspective on how we got from segregation to where we are now and why there is under achievement in the Black community. You may or may now agree with the conclusions, but it is a very interesting read.

It was objectively done. NBC made the point that it could have been about many American cities. I wish they had given more attention to Melton's tactics in trying to remedy a bad situation.

I found it refreshing to hear African Americans state that something is very wrong with a culture where the father is not part of the family.  The Jackson mayor really hit this point strongly.  Some related it to the rap music culture while others debated that relation.  Some of the things pointed out has been a major part of what Bill Crosby has been saying for some time.  The depressing thing was no real solutions were given, only generalities.
