Faculty/Staff who left USM prior to August 2003
Permalink Closed

Please use this thread to let us know the names of faculty/staff who left USM between the time that SFT was "installed" as president of USM (August 2002?) and August 2003 (when Babbs' list takes over).  If you can, tell us their name, their dept. or job title at USM, and where they went (another university/private sector, etc.).  I will compile a list and post periodically like Babbs is doing for the 03-04 losses.

Thanks,

Truth

Repost for Ray from Babb's list thread:

Just an FYI then, Jean-Louis Dassier left FL&L before August 2003.  He started his position in Michigan at the beginning of this year.

That would be Lynda Gilbert. She left USM for a similar position at Texas Tech, and is now the Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs for the University of Alabama System (her boss, Chancellor Malcolm Portera, is a former president at Mississippi State).

Nancy Whittaker, who Gilbert hired at USM as Financial Affairs director, left about the same time as Gilbert and also went to Texas Tech, where she is still employed as the Assistant Vice-President for Financial Affairs.

I will list myself, Linda Nunes, Manager of the Office of Independent Study, left in Oct. 2002, and I had replaced Sandy McGowan who left in August of 2001.  My job was retroactively downgraded to Coordinator AFTER I left (only at USM).  Other departures from CEDL included Theresa Parker (retired), Cindy Branton, Meta Blanshard.  A huge loss was Cindy Sheffield in the Registrar's office.

Katherine Melton (wife of Mike Melton) also left when Mike did. She was an administrative assistant in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Muriel Azria left her position as faculty in Child Development. Her husband was in the School of HPR, but I can't remember his name. The last name is not Azria.

Was talking to someone out of COH and Muriel's husband was in HPR, Ronnie Evans.  Person from COH also mentioned that Sandy Gangstead and Jan Drummond both from HPR also left about that time.  SG went somewhere in Georgia and JD went to Oklahoma (Tulsa U., I think).

All were eligible to retire though, and some significance should be given to that. You do anything for 20+ years--even teaching--and you get tired of it.

I did not see the HA letter to which you refer. I do know, however, that the postings on this board by LVN have been among the sagest. I do not know him/her, but based on her postings LVN seems to be a really nice person.

I may have missed her name, but if it wasn't on the list -- from the Library -- Meg Meiman (American University)

I bet to differ with you N2ME. Many dedicated college professors teach for many more than a mere 20+ years and still enjoy it. Mistreatment by ones superiors can, of course, diminish that enthusiasm somewhat.

from a friend who is a cj major:

...Michael Smith. He will do private work on the coast and he became an ordained Episcapol Priest so he will do that duty.

Cabana went back to Parchman as supervisor.  Taylor will retire for a semester and then come back and teach part-time.

...again, this is according to what he's been told.

I think you've confused LVN with somebody else. Here's her letter and part of the response to it from Seeker (who hated EVERYTHING!) As you can see, even Seeker didn't find it objectionable.

Well, we can all breathe easier now that professor Gary Stringer will be taking his million-dollar, world-famous National Endowment for the Humanities grant and leaving us for Texas A&M. And taking his musician wife, professor Mary Ann Stringer with him.

It was brilliant of University of Southern Mississippi President Shelby Thames to get rid of two faculty members in one fell swoop. Three, if we count professor Frank Glamser. How efficient!

Way to go, Dr. Thames and friends at the Institutions of Higher Learning. This is an important step towards the establishment of a fine technical institute where a real university used to be.

Linda Nunes

Seeker wrote. "......it is a much better letter than the one penned by Joe Parker last week. It addresses an issue, states the case and refrains from name calling......This letter didn't hurt your cause in the area of public opinion.

...is it possible to add a notation of some sort to state whether they left because of Thames or not? My optimism wants to believe that one man did not cause all of these people (including those on the other thread) to leave. "Say it isn't so Joe!"

BTW, I know a few professors left the history dept. around the time Thames was installed: Ciccarelli, Spruell (formerly Wheeler),can't remember his name but he was head of Asian history.  Anyone able to shed some light?
