HA: Logo dispute going to lawyers

From the HA:

From the article:

Giannini was asked if there was any scenario in which he could envision changing the logo again at Iowa's behest.

"I don't see that happening," Giannini said.

Giannini has had talks with Iowa's Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby about the logo flap. The two essentially agreed to turn the matter over to the lawyers, Giannini said.

Southern Miss is being represented in the matter by J.T. Martin, an intellectual property attorney in Washington, D.C.

Why pay an outsider when we already have one of our own on salary?

Because:

a) she's never passed the bar anywhere (to my knowledge)

b) she's too busy doing 50% of her former job

I thought participants on this board would get a kick out of that particular assertion by MVV

I have heard that when the Southern Miss logo was introduced, there were a lot of the fans on Eagletalk who said it looked too much like the Iowa logo.  Are those old comments archived, cached, or whatever?  What I am wondering is whether the Iowa attorneys can use our own fan comments against us.  Maybe I should ask on Eagletalk.  That ought to stir up a little conversation.

I hate post again on this, but after reading Giannini's comments, I have to say he has a problem with horse excrement.

He makes it seem that there was a groundswell of demand (through focus groups etc.) to change the old eagle--horse excrement. In the five years I managed the licensing program, not one person ever mentioned changing marks. It was all Giannini's single-minded unilateral idea. From 1997 to 2002, USM had a nearly 200 percent increase in merchandise with the old bird.

He says the old attack eagle didn't reproduce well on merchandise, again--horse excrement. The only problem manufacturers had reproducing the bird was when Giannini kept trying to get them to use an unofficial gold color called "vegas gold," which has no PMS number.

He says it cost hundreds of thousands to change marks--horse excrement. It's my understanding Giannini got the design work done though special favors (season tickets and such) to the designer.

My time at USM was a constant battle with athletics, trying to get them to comply with licensing policy. They were continually letting unlicensed manufacturers produce USM merchandise, thereby jeopardizing our ownership of the marks.

Giannini has gotten himself in a fight with some folks who actually know something about licensing, and they are going to clean his clock. When this is over, Giannini is not going to have anything to show for his battle except an enormous legal bill to go with his enormous ego.

Thanks, T.C.  After my earlier post, I went over to Eagletalk thinking I might challenge the memory of a few of those posters.  Much to my surprise, several of them have made statements confirming what you say; things like, "The new logo is all right, but I liked the Attack Eagle better."

To my greater surprise, I found where someone named Catfish Eagle has linked back to archived Eagletalk boards as far back as 2000. All those old comments are preserved out there somewhere.

Where is the money to defend our theft of Iowa's Iggle to come from? From Giannini's budget? out of his hide? No, out of taxpayers' hides. Why should taxpayers have to foot the bill for this utterly stupid example of change for the sake of change? I demand an accounting. The Thames administration's legal expenses alone are going to bankrupt this entire state. I don't understand why the bidness folks on the ihl board can't seem at least to understand THAT. At the very least, Giannini should say "I'm sorry," give Iowa its Iggle back and return us to our old trusty Seymour. But "I'm sorry" is not in the Thames' era vocabulary.
