An article in this morning's SunHerald has more to do with USM and Mississippi's system of higher education than might appear on the surface. Specifically, the article states that the Coast and Mobile are competing for a 5 billion dollar Nissan-like deal, and the Mississippi legislature will be considering a 300 million dollar incentive package designed to grease the way for it to be located on the Coast. The article does not name the industry. I am convinced that one major detriment to Mississippi attracting major new Nissan-sized industry has to do with embarrasing things occurring in Mississippi's higher education system, such as the current USM situation. Leaders of industry are not stupid. They are well educated. They read the newspapers. They talk to people. Their executives and others within their organizations are reluctant to move to a place where the higher education system is not healthy. I am sure that higher education must play a role in an industry's choice of a new site. The terribly brutal manner with which Stringer and Glamser were treated at USM is not goling to help Mississippi or the Mississippi Gulf Coast as it competes with Mobile for whatever industry is under consideration for relocation. USM and the IHL have given Mississippi a black eye insofar as economic development is concerned. If USM is really interested in economic development, it will begin to run USM like a university. The IHL should expect it. The taxpayers should demand it.

The above article was in this morning's Clarion-Ledger, not the SunHerald. My error. I read both of those newspapers.

The lack of access to higher education has long been a deep and pressing concern of the business and political leadership on the coast. Coast leaders are not happy with the administration of the Gulf Park campus. After a long, tortured effort to expand the program to four years, it is languishing. The demand is there; Tulane's University College campus is growing quickly, even though its classes are held in a shopping center.

Coast leaders understand that the political reality is that Gulf Park will not be spun off as a separate university. The emerging consensus is that Gulf Park needs to be shifted to either MSU or Ole Miss--institutions that would have an incentive to expand the enrollment and programs offered on the campus. The wheels are turning on this, but it is anyone's guess if anything will happen anytime soon.

Several years ago, Dr. Khayat told me that Ole Miss would be "delighted" to take over Gulf Park & that they could do it without messing up their relationship with community colleges. (This was during the infamous lawsuit.) Although I bleed black & gold, I think he might be right.

Heck, it would be an improvement if the University of Mississippi took over the Hattiesburg campus as well, I'm afraid.

it's not just the higher education system, it's also the K-12 system.  for many of the employees of these companies it's where their children will go to school that's important.  for companies like Nissan their interests in the higher education system have to do more with the ability to provide workforce training programs.

It might be instructive to check into the agreement Kentucky worked out with Toyota (I believe it was Toyota). They set up a special school via UK Continuing Ed to create a Japanese school for the kids of the japanese supervisors/administrators. The Governor and UK anted up about $1 mil each and it seems to be successful.

Hey, with Dvorak's KY ties, maybe she's working to bring this about to clear her name, etc. . ..

Ditto to the sage comments of Invictus. Bobby Khayat is the anti-Thames, an honest, classy, unpretentious guy who happens to be an extraordinary administrator, fund raiser, and ambassador for Ole Miss. I still believe that one of the best strategies proposed for ousting Thames is the Mississippi University President Exchange Training Program, or MUPET. I dare say Shelby wouldn't last a month in Oxford. Could someone pitch this idea to Mr. Klumb?

The relationship between USM and the CC's is so bad that the CC's are actively encouraging students to go to other places, even out of state.  The reason that the USM leadership (both the dome and the GP "leadership team") don't care about the CC students is that the current vision for the Gulf Park campus is a Univeristy of Phoenix model.  The Kenbot has repeatedly told people down here that UP must be great because they "have over 300,000 students."  Our fearless leaders think they don't need Mississippi students because they can charge major bucks to out of state students to attend the "world class" GP university.  The world class reputation of Southern Miss will have students flocking in from around the world.  Don't get me wrong, I love USM, but this is another case of delusions of grandeur!

Austin Eagle, glad to see you back!  Yes, SFT should become a MUPET ASAP.  Oh, wait, I think he already is one!

I have a suggestion...USM should contact Nova University to see about a merger. We could become the Nova University, Mississippi Branch. we already have that American World University thing going on here in Mississippi. We don't need to worry about serving Mississippians, we need to offer our fine model of education to everyone in the world.  That is how we become World class!

Somebody over at Seymour's said USM no longer offers a graduate program in industrial psych. It was not listed on the graduate school's website. Given the emphasis on economic development, I doubt USM would drop the program without good reason. I do know there was a time when Mississippi State expressed an interest in establishing such a program. Has IHL has transferred the program to Starkville?

Thank you Ma'am. It's good to be home in south Texas again. I missed the 98 degree heat and 90% humidity. That New England weather is so bland. I can't imagine why Kim Chaze would have any interest in living in New Hampshire. By the way, I was on the ground in Nashville for a couple of hours between flights, looked everywhere for Judge Cooley's Risk Manager, but never spotted the gentleman. I did feel some very strong "Truth vibes" however...at least I hope that's what it was. Couldn't have just been that airport chow, could it?

No, the program has not moved to Starkville. But there are no I/O faculty at USM anymore. They have all left for greener pastures. It's rather hard to keep a program going with no faculty who can teach the courses.

Then why not replace them?

You know, what shocks the pants off me is that when I read this post, it didn't sound half bad.  I'm tired of being second class--we're much better than that.  Or at least we used to be.  I think I'd rather be U of Miss South Campus rather than continue under the SFT regime that seems to have us on a downward spiral.  At least I expect the faculty would get more respect and fairer treatment than we are getting now.

What is I/O? I can't keep up with all of the letters appearing on this board (e.g., FS, AD, HD).

Thanks for this info; I have just sent it off to the IHL.

I heard that if CEP does not plan to resurrect it CBED might pick it up rather than let it slide to State or Ole Miss.

My contacts in the Management dept. in the CBED tried to get the I/O degree moved, but Bill Gunther wouldn't push for it. I/O Psyc. faculty at the time wanted to merge with human resource faculty. But as is now the case USM fails to move forward.

Maybe somebody from one of the other comprehensive state universities is reading this message board and would like to have the program. I hear there is no other such program anywhere in Mississippi.

Geographically it would fit well at USM. If not USM, Jackson State might give it a good home.

It is what comes after E/I/E . Which is what this board sounds like sometimes...but, somebody is always willing to pitch in with what they THINK the letters stand for.

Gotta go take a wife so the rat can eat the cheese. Or should I say? Gotta go TAW so the RCETC?

You weren't wrong at all, so far as I know. The comment was meant to be more 'cute' than it probably came off...I was simply agreeing that it is sometimes hard to decode all the letters.

No offense intended. Just putting my tongue in my cheek.

Or it could be the 1st two letters in "IOU" which is what those pay raises may turn into if enrollment does go up.

Heather,

When did the Industrial/Organizational program evaporate?

Were the I/O faculty not replaced because USM won't offer vaguely competitive salaries?  Because the Thames regime scared off their potential replacements?  Or was something else going on--such as a turf battle over control of the program?

Robert Campbell

PS. Degree holders in I/O get good jobs in industry.  There are some pretty good prospects for grant funding in I/O as well.  Allowing an I/O program to wither on the vine makes no sense given Shelby's declared agenda.  Of course, it makes excellent sense given his undeclared agenda...

The inability to find new faculty in I/O began before Thames.  I believe it mostly centered around not paying market value which is much higher than the ~40k psych professors started at.

I am told there is money to be made in I/O but my understanding was the past profs were more in the habit of securing consulting contracts which brought money into their pockets but not the university.  Therefore the univ did not see a reason to invest the extra $$ into higher salaries.
