For the record: The Accounting Department is a laughing stock. The old friend accounting professor, the "old buddy" current Chair, wanted to hire is balking at the $99,000 a year salary seems he wants what he's currently making as a Director. Questions remains will the current Chair squeeze the CoB's budget to get him or attempt to hire the only other applicant.
The Administrative Assistant left June 2nd and they've yet to find a replacement. The current Chair just wants a warm body in the seat so he can be off. Students currently are trying to cover the office but his mood swings are causing them both to want to quit. Seems Ms. Crain is harder to replace than he expected. Bet she's glad she's gone to greener pasturers and laughing. Rumor has it that several applicants have contacted her about her job. What a lady she hasn't said a negative thing about the department, college or university. The new Interim will take over August 1st and he surely wanted to keep her and her knowledge of the department. It's definitely the CoB's and the department's loss. Maybe they should have offered her more money to stay.
I had heard about the $99,000 offer and that the guy was not happy with it, but the stuff about the students and the chair and the search is all new stuff to me.
The "old friend" prof holds some sort of endowed chair. I heard that the offer could have been more than $99,000, but the AD's style is to keep offers below certain levels/others' compensation.
The China thing is more interesting now. According to the list of participants on the AIB website, Niroomand is also there. Double the $5,000 estimate from earlier --- it's now $10,000 and rising. Looks like the travel budgets of 20 faculty just got swallowed by the whale.
Wanda went to Polk Construction in Columbia less than ten minutes from her home. Her last day at USM was June 2nd. I personally congratulate her on furthering her career and finances. However, she's still a USM fan. She has a few confidants she talks to regularly via phone and e-mail and only one of those is from the department she left.
This guy will soon be the department chair. I bet they wanted to keep his base lower until they have to capitulate with the chair bump in his pay. He probably will get a little over $100K before it's all said and done. He'll spend one year as a 9 month faculty at that rate and then probably get about a $20K bump to be chair of the department. He may be near $130K at that time. Us old timers came around too early.
