"One thing he's already figured out: Today's college kids are different than they were when he was in school. They're raised in a different world, by a different type of parent, and often lack a certain independence, he said. They need leadership and character training.

"That dynamic has changed in America," he said. "We need to improve the opportunities for character development."

To that end, he is considering adding a minor in leadership to the school's selection.

He also is forming a rock-country band with a few staffers. It'll be called Bark, and will play songs by the Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the like. Foglesong will sing."

Don't you think SFT could benefit from exposure to all of this, especially the leadership and character training?

    ...Stipends

Graduate students holding teaching, research and service assistantships will see their stipends grow about $1,000.

    Promise Awards

Scholarships for incoming freshmen and community college transfers whose family income is below $30,000. Recipients must maintain a 2.5 grade point average....

...Foglesong began a series of webcasts to talk about university issues....

...Foglesong begins each day by running four miles or more, and said he has not had a day off - including weekends - since coming to MSU....

...Despite all that, he swears he is slowing down. He has more time than he did in his old job, he said, and is getting used to consulting people before issuing orders.

He does not expect things to take years to get done like he sees elsewhere in academia, but he knows it won't get done tomorrow, either. "I've learned patience," he said....

We should hope for a general like this--patience, consultation, etc. wow.

If the man will actually listen to his faculty, then USM is indeed in big trouble.

Personally, I would like to see Shelby fronting a rock band.  In many ways he already reminds me of Axl Rose.

Could that be because Shelby and Axl both have an appetite for destruction?

Yes, and when Shelby heads over to the Dana's office he has a tendency to break into a raucous version of "Sweet Child of Mine."
