That's a link to another letter, unrelated to USM's situation.
I feel that I must reply to the letter by Patricia Jackson ("Faculty and alumni should make the best of next two years," June 21). She states her opinion that the faculty of USM are being unprofessional and irresponsible in not working with President Shelby Thames.
Indeed, the faculty have been trying for two years to do just that! The difficulty is not with the faculty, but with Dr. Thames himself, who seems incapable of working with the elected representatives of his own advisory personnel - the faculty senate, academic council, graduate council and staff council. Faculty senate is the elected body which represents the views and advice of the faculty as a whole which is present at all universities and which works closely with the president to achieve the university goals.
Lay responsibility where it is due; the unprofessional conduct lies squarely with Thames.
Great letter! That is the type of letter our faculty and friends needs to write to our editor(s) How many times must we read a letter blasting SFT one minute only to have two letters crying the faculty should leave SFT to lead and administrate the university. We need a grassroots effort to get out our message, state the facts, clear up the misconceptions and do it in such a way we don't come across as "lazy" and "malcontents". Let our professionalism guide us and encourage our faculty to communicate our concerns with the public. Negative letters only encourage them (the community at large) taking SFT side.
