The American Association of University Professors, USM Chapter, calls upon the Thames administration to stop all major actions currently underway, including:
Outsourcing of Physical Plant and Printing Services.
The Reduction of Graduate Assistantships in Teaching Oriented Departments at USM resulting from the recent administrative mandate to increase the size of individual graduate assistantships allowing times for programs to secure adequate funding.
Implementation of new fund for incoming Ph.D students (funded all or in part from money saved by GA reorganization).
USM is now approximately one year from a transition to a new President and academic administration. It is inappropriate for the Thames administration to undertake any changes which will significantly limit choices and actions available to the next administration. The AAUP membership encourages and will support the current administration in its efforts to maintain our good standing with all accreditation agencies, to maintain or improve our current academic programming, and to plan for a successful transition to a new administration in the spring of 2007.
