Economic loss to USM

I am sad to announce that effective Friday, June 25, Michael Kimber and Marian Wilson Kimber are closing their highly profitable t-shirt business and moving to Iowa City.   When questioned about whether they plan to reopen at the new site, they were reluctant to comment.   Friends, however, said that they are fairly sure that the Kimbers "damn sure hope not."

WILSON KIMBER TO MOVE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

For immediate release

Marian Wilson Kimber, former associate professor of musicology, has abandoned her lucrative T-shirt business for a position at the University of Iowa. Wilson Kimber's T-shirts with quotations by Neil McMillen, Noel Polk and W. Harrison ("NO QUARTER") raised over $2000 for the AAUP-USM legal defense fund. "In the last two months we have outgrown our economic development model," said Wilson Kimber. "It is now time to retool our model so that we can continue to grow."
Dr. Wilson Kimber hailed the USM AAUP's successful leadership in increasing the legal defense fund's assets and the chapter's funding for Glamser's and Stringer's lawyers in her last year as an associate professor at Southern Miss.
"Since Dr. Wilson Kimber came on board in March 2004, the net assets of the legal defense fund have grown from $0 to $38 Thousand," said AAUP president, Amy Young. "We've done this, after teaching in complete upheavel for the past two consecutive years and coming under some personal fire. I find that amazing and impressive beyond belief."
Wilson Kimber will spend the majority of her time working on her own research and related activities including spearheading the development of a monograph and establishing partnerships with university colleagues. She will continue to manage her own intellectual property without tiresome e-mail monitoring.
"Innovation-based musicological development is truly my passion," said Wilson Kimber. "With the growth of our USM's efforts in economic development, it makes perfect sense to take our commitment to the next level by making this transition. With this move to Iowa, I can spend more of my time working on musicological development projects that will benefit the musicological community, our academic community, and the universe as we push forward towards a world where arts and humanities are valued for their inherent worth, not their monetary value."

Those in the know are aware of a unique design by MWK, one that will, no doubt, drastically increase in value over the years.   It is gold, not white, bears the emblem of the screaming eagle, depicts SFT with an axe in his hand, and is inscribed with the motto "anyone, anywhere, anytime."   Persons in possession of this valuable artifact would be wise to hold onto it.

This is the funniest thing I've read on this board....we're losing so much more than just a wonderful music professor and entrepreneur...we're losing a wonderful WIT as well.  Our loss is U of Iowa's gain!

Thanks, truth, I'm honored. I hope to meet you at the celebration party for Thames's departure. It should be scheduled a month or so later, so all of the USM expatriots can buy our plane tickets.

The aforementionted "AX" t-shirt is only owned by one ex-USM employee who earned it several times over (and me).

I'm still waiting for Judge Cooley's RM to come by and get his "I am Judge Cooley Risk Manager" shirt.

AMY YOUNG--when you get back from the field, there's a special T-shirt waiting for you.

Marion,

Received the shirts and took them to the proper people down in Daytona FLA. They loved them btw. Have a great trek up to Iowa and keep in touch. We'll catch up on our new jobs in the near future.

I couldn't agree more.  I've really enjoyed your insights, wit, and commitment to the cause.  And, as I said, I laughed and laughed when I read about the "I'm Judge Cooley's Risk Manager" t-shirt. All good wishes for your family and a wodnerful, happy new life in Iowa.  I do hope that you'll continue to be a part of the board even after your move.....

Warmly,

Let Freedom Ring

Scholarly conf. on Spring of 2004 at USM
Permalink Closed

Seriously, we HAVE to organize a scholarly conference on all that's happened here in the spring of 2004. In fact, it could be called "The Spring of 2004 at USM Scholarly Conference" and should be planned for immediately after the expiration of the two-year moratorium on G&S's public comments so that they can participate. We can get all the participants to come--not only USM faculty, but Robert Campbell, Dennis Flynn, Bob Evans, Richard Todd. People from across the globe. We can do press releases, a "conference proceedings," and perhaps a follow-up or two after that. We can probably get one of the casinos on the coast to sponsor it, give us free meeting rooms, etc.

If anyone else cottons to this idea, contact Amy. She'll know what to do.

How about some guest speakers from AAUP national officers? I envision a session titled, "WARNING! This could happen to you!" for out of town academics.

I heard rumors that someone was writing a book about all this, but I don't know who it is. Someone should. It would be more interesting than Exit 13 and cover many more issues. Not to mention having fabulous satirical art and fun limericks!

The keynote speaker should be none other than Thomas Cooley himself. In fact, I would come to the conference just to find out who the "real" Thomas Cooley is.

If someone isn't handed a gag order, she'll be able to publish the book as nonfiction. She is most anxious to be a part of the conference too.  Once again, Fireshelby (and you too Truth), you are to be so commended in gathering this particular community. Kudos!

This is a conference, this is a book, this is big.

And the book should be called "Exit 65".  That is the new exit number from Interstate 55 now.
