If this is already posted somewhere, forgive me. I've been out of touch with the board most of the day.

UT Board of Regents named the new president of UT Pan AM today...huge surprise...it's not Hudson.

Here it is: http://www.uhv.edu/oua/press/press_releases/june_8_04.htm. Hudson must really want to live in Texas!

An excerpt of the press release:

Five Finalists for the Presidency of
University of Houston-Victoria Announced

The University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) Presidential Search Committee has concluded the preliminary phase of the search process to find a new president to lead UHV. The committee has identified five individuals to participate in campus visits.

The candidates, and the dates they will visit the campus, are:

·       Tim Hudson, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Southern Mississippi, June 7.

·       Lewis Jones, Vice President for Academic Affairs, David N. Myers University, June 10.

·       Gregory Aloia, Dean, College of Education, Florida Atlantic University, June 17.

·       Betsy Boze, Dean, School of Business, University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, June 22.

·       Gary Moore, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Jacksonville University, June 24.

During the visits, each candidate will participate in an open forum to which faculty, staff and students will be invited. These sessions will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room located in the University Center building on the UHV campus.

Hudson has been Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Southern Mississippi since 2002. He previously served as Dean of the College of International and Continuing Education at USM for more than a decade, and prior to that he worked as an intelligence analyst at the US Department of State in Washington, DC.

Hudson earned a Ph.D. in geography from Clark University. He also holds a B.A. in history and Latin American studies and a M.A. in geography, both from the University of Southern Mississippi.

More on the school. Note that it is a "delivery system" not a "location." So maybe TH can continue to live here in his mansion if he gets the job.

The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region, is an upper-level institution that offers undergraduate and graduate students more than 30 degree programs and concentrations in the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Business, and Education. A faculty of experts at UHV offers students individual attention to help them succeed, whether learning in a classroom or online. UHV is defined more as a delivery system than as a location, as the university extends instruction, learning support, student services and community outreach to any area. Although it serves primarily commuting students from Victoria and surrounding counties, UHV also offers degree programs, in collaboration with other UH System institutions, at two off-campus centers in Fort Bend County and offers courses at a number of off-campus sites in the region. Since its founding in 1973, outreach, community partnerships and collaboration have characterized UHV’s history and mission.

Well, you all know that he really won't move to Texas, or take the job. Like Joe Paul, this is just an opportunity to travel around and tell everyone how great USM is! (Sarcasm)

Is the U of Houston a Jesuit school, or am I thinking of U of Dallas or somewhere else?

Many years ago, the University of Houston was a private institution, but it was later taken over by the state. I suppose it is still a public university. I recall that, when it was private, some person whose last name was "Cullen" was a benefactor. They even had a "Cullen Boulevard," as I recall.  Many years ago I applied to graduate school there, as a "backup." They cashed my application-fee check, but I never heard from them regarding my application. Their lack of response, however, didn't bother me very much because I managed to get in some other better schools. Lucky me.

University of Dallas (as opposed to UT Dallas) is a private school with a catholic foundation, maybe Jesuit.  It has a well-respected english program or so I am told by a friend on the faculty there.  University of Houston is a pretty decent school; I have never before heard of the University of Houston - Victoria.

In another pm update, the HA discusses Tim Hudson being a candidate at the University of Houston - Victoria.

"Hudson earlier was an unsuccessful candidate for president at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg and at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania."

Looks like tomorrow will be an interesting new day!

The University of Houston System has one flagship campus, UH-Central, andseveral satellites, e.g. UH-Victoria, UH-Clear Lake, UH-Downtown.

The Central campus is a good school, so good in fact that it will not even accept applications for graduate admission or transfer from the satellites. Of course this is just the general impression among the satellite students, but it's supported by everyone I know who tried to get into Central. Yes, that is more than one person.

The point is that the UH satellites are lower in status than the GC. Hudson can have any one of them he likes.

Cowboy's Sweetheart,

There still is a Cullen Boulevard in Houston.  I'm pretty sure it was named after Roy Cullen, a big oilman.

At one time, U of H was mockingly referred to as "Cougar High," but it has improved over the years and is taken seriously now.

Meanwhile, I don't want to knock the good people of Victoria, Texas, but it has never exactly been a citadel of higher learning.
