accountants prepare to hire an old friend

As the add below indicates, USM's accounting department is doing some last minute searching.  Or so it appears.  Not really.  The soon to be named hire has already visited and was brought aboard some time ago by friends and relatives.  Why would the add be written for a senior professor when the age profile of the department is top heavy?  That's what the target is, a senior professor.  The ad was written with a certain someone in mind.

The Ad:

The School of Accountancy at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a tenure-track position in accounting (pending final budget approval) beginning in August 2006. Rank is open with a preference for candidates qualified for the rank of associate or full professor. The position is located at the Gulf Coast Campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Teaching responsibilities will include all Southern Miss teaching sites and online instruction. Minimum qualifications include: an earned doctorate in accounting with an established record of research, experience with teaching nontraditional student population, previous exposure to online course delivery and evidence of interacting with the business community. Preferred qualifications include academic leadership experience and an interest in teaching auditing and/or managerial accounting courses. The University of Southern Mississippi has an enrollment of 15,000. The College of Business has an enrollment of about 2,000; it is AACSB- accredited at both the undergraduate and master's levels. Applicants should send a vita to Roderick B. Posey, The University of Southern Mississippi, School of Accountancy and Information Systems, 118 College Drive #5178, Hattiesburg, MS 39406-0001. For full consideration candidates should submit application materials by June 1, 2006. Review of candidates will continue until the position is filled. AA/EOE/ADAI

The reasoning behind their hire is that they want someone will not rock their boat. They are the least research active department in COB and they are working hard to stay that way. They have been rewarded by every dean of COB including the current dean.
They are rewarded because they are complicit and compliant. It is the reason the Mark Depree has his web page and his lawsuit. There is no evidence that things will change. Weak administrators buy support. Unproductive people come cheap; you can buy their support for very few dollars.

Heard today that the selected old friend was again on campus.  So once again a search with a known result.  Cossack stated it well when he/she stated that they do not want someone that will rock their boat.  Does make one ask why they are so afraid of new blood.  How many on the accounting faculty have USM degrees?

Have they realized that "their boat" is the 21st Century Titanic????????????

The replacement was indeed on campus and in JGH yesterday.  He had lunch with the soon exiting Chair and the Director of UAS at their favorite lunch spot - McDonalds.  Definitely a done deal.  The Chair is on his way out quickly and is trying to have who "he" wants in place prior to his replacement taking over.  He continues cushioning schedules and showing favoritism as he wishes for those in his favor before his official last day.  Others can't wait for the replacement to take over - real management syle.  Finally, this department will get an unbiased leader.  And NO, the replacement is not a Morgan nor related to one.

I was informed that the only reason the Administrative Assistant is staying is because the upcoming replacement has asked her to.  She was headed for greener pastures in Arkansas and still may be by June 1st if some demands aren't agreed to.  Who can blame her?  Our secretary said that the Accounting secretary was the only one in the CoB forgotten the week of Administrative Professionals week.  What a shame too after all she was asked to help a failing department over there (UAS) that week for recruitment.  Good staff is hard to find.  Look around that building sometime see who's in the offices and who's not.  Try calling each of the departments in the CoB sometime see who answers and who doesn't - the Dome has done this in the past to only find the Accounting secretary the only one to answer in the building.  Interesting I'd say.  To beat all she's battled with cancer and won.  My advice to her would be get gone from here honey - follow the money and forget those unappreciative jerks.

Does anyone on this board know how much the position is budged for?  The advertisement does not give much about the salary level just the academic rank.  Will the position be competitive or pushed down to the level of the current faculty in accounting there?

The person who reportedly holds the highest salary for Administrative Assistant out of the Dome is Gail Hemard, Dana Thames personal administrative assistant. She was the AA for the Dean of CoEP and retired but was lured out of retirement due to Dana's constant screwups.

Is it true that this admin. assistant has turned her resignation in today?

Yes, it's true.  She gave them the "buh bye" today and will be making many fold more in the near future.  Like always, Doty tried to appear calm and in control in the face of adversity.  But, he's slipping and everybody knows it.  Only a favor trading chair and a doofus chair are propping him up right now, though he is bringing "the old friend" back to accounting, who will assume the role of chair after next year.  The only hope now lies with the AD.
