Post Info TOPIC: Joe Paul
Vertically Challenged

Joe Paul

I find it interesting that the administration of Joe Paul has remained remarkably distant from discussion on this board.  I'm curious to hear why he has remained "above the fray" so to speak, over the past 3 years.

Let's call to carpet, shall we? Where does the good Dr. Paul stand on the current administration and what will transpire?  Let there be no doubt that there is a certain resilience on campus for the man-

Tread softly, VC. This has been discussed numerous times before on this board. You won't get much in the way of anti-Paul sentiment from the board regulars, even though he continues to faithfully serve corrupt masters.

Dr. Paul was discussed a bit on the old FireShelby board. He's something of a survivor & while he certainly has made some concessions to the Thames administration, he has endured three presidents & is likely to make it to a fourth before he retires. I have a high professional opinion of the entire student services operation at USM. Joe has some pretty sharp young administrators working with him, too.

However, nobody should ever think that Joe Paul is a roofer, including Joe.

Joe's hands may not be as dirty as those of the gang that couldn't shoot straight, but he should be held accountable for part of the mess. He did not have the backbone to stand up to them. He was part of the group that attacked Myron. He has some influence in town--school board stint, etc.--but he has not used it. I have absolutely no respect for him.

It is comments like the above which accentuate why the occupation of professor has become so debased.  Once upon a time, professorship carried dignity.  Now it has been diluted by a glut of would-be hippies who think their duty is to carry on partisan-like war against administrators they don't like rather focus on their real job: educating those who seek to broaden their horizons.

Sad to say, but the negative stereotype of the high-toking college prof as overpaid and underworked interest shill is becoming more and more realized.  Attempt to drag a good man like Joe Paul into your little miasma of hearsay, and you'll sink even further.  I hope for the sake of decency that none of your students presently address you as sir or ma'am.  Believe me, those terms are hopelessly misdirected on the small children I see populating this board today.

Trollicus, your remarks about the faculty are more offensive than the remarks on this thread about Dr. Paul. You and I must not be acquainted with the same people.

Well, LVN, at least the troll used a proper nom.

I was a little quick with the mouse button. I neglected to include this photo of Trollicus' visit with the USM faculty.

Dr. Paul will play whatever role he needs to play to survive.

Observer:

We have an overstock on these sorts. They have been mentioned on other threads. In addition to Joe Paul, we have Jay Grimes, Joan Exline, Cynthia Moore, Willie Pierce, Susan Siltanen, Wanda Maulding, Elliot Pood, Russ Willis, Rex Gandy, Cecil Burge and now Joe Morgan (and a slew of others, including some chairs). The sad fact is that most don't survive despite their efforts (look who has left the Dome fold in four years). The ones left come in several flavors--from Yes men who have compromised and done others dirty until they have no sign left of a core moral compass, to extremely vicious and malicious folks who are out for number one first and foremost. Can any be salvaged? Are any worth salvaging? I believe that the ones with deep roots in the good old boy and girl system at USM will survive, and we'll have to live with them. Sad.

in fact, there are some who have resigned their positions in order to look like they haven't compromised their values, but have plans to re-emerge as administrators in the next administration. they're as bad as the rest, but slicker (or think they're slicker).

There are few people who have resigned who remain at USM, so are you saying they will return? The few mid level administrators (people I know in COB, COEP, COH, COAL) who have stepped down and are still at USM could care less about ever doing another day's administration for USM no matter who is President. All were basically forced out directly or punished so bad that they had to step down (a la Jim Hollingsworth). Nothing here is worth returning to for the lousy administrative stipend, and I bet few of these folks are chomping at the bit to apply for an opening in the future.
