USM honors Katrina heroes

GULFPORT – About a mile inland from this city’s Hurricane Katrina-obliterated beachfront, the University of Southern Mississippi recognized on Friday individuals who helped resuscitate the limping institution after the storm.

University officials recognized 27 faculty and staff, about half from the Hattiesburg campus, chosen by a committee from 80 nominees. ...

...“Heroes are not born – there is no hero gene,” Provost Jay Grimes said, adding that many more individuals beyond the 27 honorees worked hard for the university’s recovery. “Heroes are created by adversity and need.”

if i'm not mistaken MSU has received and is eligible to receive appalachian regional commission money. it's due to its location.
