Actually, the posts are scratching the surface of the malfeasance that goes on the business college. They need to keep coming, and touch on all possible areas of corruption and graft that goes on there.

Why is he an idiot and an embarrassment to USM? Because he is exposing the corrupt system? Because he bucks the good-old-boy system? Because he doesn't want or need the nickel-and-dime raises that others in the CoB scramble around for? Because he refuses to wash Doty's car so that he can get promoted or get a raise?
There are real CRIMES being perpetrated at USM by administrators, faculty, and staff who have been around for years. These people have a wink-wink, nudge-nudge brotherhood in place that keeps them in Canebrake housing and high-dollar living. Dr. Depree will one day be publicly commended for uncovering corruption at USM.
Mark Depree is neither. Contrary to many others in COB, I have never found Mark Depree to have lied about an issue or person. He has a love of his academic discipline and is committed to ducating students so that they can be successful in their careers. His department has systematically discriminated against him for years by denying him the resource support given to others, and by giving him lower raises than his productivity would command. Despite recommendations to the contrary, administrators have continued their pattern of discriminatory treatment. Unfortunately for COB, and the university, he has the resources and acumen to combat their actions. I suspect that the university will eventually find that they have taken the wrong approach and try to extract themselves from the tar baby they have grabbed. It likely will take a while for that to happen since the administration has a learning curve with a very modest slope.

Doesn't Depree live in Canebrake too? That's where he shot the puppy.

Yes, he did shoot the darling little puppy-wuppy. As a mere homo sapien, Depree should have happily offered the dog his leg to gnaw on. After all, what is a person compared to a canine. The dog-owner mentality is something to behold.

Dr. J. Robert Coltharp and his attorneys, Dukes, McMahan, Andrews, et al, insisted that before they dropped the charges against me, I agree to absolute confidentiality. I refused. They had to live with my refusal because they faced a retrial. I left money on the table to be able to tell the truth. And nothing would give me greater pleasure than to retry the charges against me in any public forum of your choosing or in the courts. Come forward, Black Cat, and put your claims to the test.
The following is what I have published many times about what happened when I was attacked by a fully-grown dog:
November 2002
Why did Dr. J. Robert Coltharp (41 Tidewater, Hattiesburg) and Lamar County Attorney, Prentiss Harrell, recently drop the charges against Dr. Marc DePree for maliciously injuring Coltharp’s dog? DePree and his attorneys proved Coltharp fabricated several different stories in order to convict DePree of a crime he did not commit and sentence him to six months in jail.
On December 8, 2001, Coltharp was training his hunting dog in a public area that prohibits dogs, even on a leash. DePree inadvertently entered the area. The dog attacked DePree. Coltharp did absolutely nothing to stop the attack. He just stood there and watched. DePree was left with no alternative but to protect himself. After losing control of his dog, Coltharp lost control of himself and tried to run over DePree in his SUV. At the time DePree was going for the police.
By December 11, 2001, Coltharp had gone on television and accused DePree of shooting his “puppy” for no reason. It didn’t matter that the “puppy” was a large, fully-grown dog or that it had attacked DePree. WDAM TV, the Hattiesburg American, and Sheriff Marvin Breazeale didn’t seem to care what the truth was. It just didn’t make for a very good story or very good politics. Suddenly, DePree was a dog hater, out looking for a dog to shoot. As a consequence, DePree received hate mail from people who had no idea what really happened. Cowards broke three large windows on the front of his home at 3 a.m.
DePree was charged with “malicious injury to a dog.” Three police cars showed up at his door. He was arrested and taken to jail for protecting himself from a dog attack. Hate mail began to flood in, including threats to shoot him.
The four attorneys who prosecuted DePree withheld evidence that would have proved that Coltharp fabricated his “puppy” story and DePree did not maliciously injure Coltharp’s dog. The evidence included Coltharp’s statement taken by the police and statements he made to his friends immediately after the incident. The dog had not wagged it’s tail and walked up to DePree. It was attacking him.
Coltharp may have thought he had gotten away with it. After all, DePree was convicted, sentenced to six months in jail, and called crazy and in need of psychiatric help by Lamar Justice Court Judge Anderson, a high school graduate. Among other adverse consequences was that DePree’s employment was threatened.
It took nearly nine months to track down the truth and confirm what DePree already knew. Now, Coltharp has dropped the criminal charges because his stories didn’t stand up to scrutiny. DePree’s lawyers established that Coltharp’s stories conflicted with each other and were not true.
To quote Jimmy Dukes, one of Coltharp’s attorneys: “You don’t have to be under oath to be a liar, but if you’re under oath, you’re not only a liar but a perjurer.”
Review the evidence for yourself. Copies of court testimony, police reports, and depositions are available upon request from Dr. Marc DePree, marcdepree@comcast.net

Hey Dr. Depree, I don't like dogs either - don't own one and hate my neighbors' unleashed dogs. Your spirited response does raise some questions for me, though perhaps I am just ignorant of the Lamar County / Mississippi justice system. Did you shoot a dog or not? You might very well have been justified and that's fine by me, but it was not stated what exactly you did to the dog. Second, how can a private citizen and his lawyers decide whether or not to drop criminal (as opposed to civil) charges against you rather than the county prosecutor? Or are you saying that since Mr. Coltharp would be the sole witness for the prosecution and he changed his story thus making him an unreliable witness and bringing in to question whether there was ever a criminal offense, that the prosecutor then dropped the case?
Finally, my initial query was about who lives in Canebrake since one of your supporters criticized Doty and his minions for living there yet you do too. I personally could care less who lives in Canebrake - hell, I thought all Business professors did - but it seems stupid to criticize Doty for it when his chief accuser - you - do also.

I’ll gladly answer all of your questions, Black Cat, when you tell me who you are.
Black Cat - quit licking yourself and answer his question. You seem like you have a lot you want to say, but are afraid to do so. Step up or sign off. This is tedious.
You see, this is an anonymous forum, as many of your CoB colleagues are thankful for, so you must excuse my desire to remain anonymous, especially to someone who likes to post attacks on other people on the internet. My original point - that you live in Canebrake and therefore it is stupid of your supporters to criticize Doty for the same - has been made. The whole dog & puppy show I couldn't give a care in the world for. I am not in the CoB, do not care about Doty one way or the other, and don't care about you either. Sorry.

As someone with a vested interest in training young reporters, I have to say it is obvious that you care a lot. First you claim he shot a "puppy". Then you admit you didn't check your facts. Second, you claim he "posts attacks". Obviously, you are following what he does. That doesn't suggest that you "dont care". However, since each of his claims are backed up with documents, I think that is called honest reporting.
DePree glides over one important issue -- that he was running in a residential neighborhood with a gun. Dog or no dog, who carries a gun to jog in Canebrake?
What is it with this Depree fetish? I don't give a crap who has what "documentation" about shooting dogs. I read this forum often (and the previous Fire Shelby forum) and that's where I got my information, even if it was wrong, so what? So sorry if dear ole Depree got his feathers ruffled because I inserted "puppy" where there should have been "dog." He must know what the community awareness of this incident is - that he shot a less-than-one-year-old dog (or puppy), but I'm glad that he shared some additional (though cryptic) information with us and cleared that up. I have stated the purpose of my original post - living in Canebrake - it is the dog shooting incident that made me remember where he lives, or at least jogs, so that's why I mentioned the "puppy." Enough with this wierdness.

And attacked by a Labrador? Puh-lease.
All of this name calling has gotten my interest. Apparently Canebrake dogs don't bite or attack. As for the suggestion that Labrador's don't attack, a little quick internet research shows that labradors aren't far behind pit bulls and german shepherds in attacking people. I was surprised, because I have always thought of Labs as being friendly dogs.

At any time in any of this, did Dr. DePree ever say, "you know, jogging with a gun is probably not a good idea. That was an error in judgement on my part. Sorry, I'll carry Mace and a big stick from now on." It reminds me of Angie, who could have said, "Oh gosh, that is a mistake on my vita. I'll fix that right away." Sometimes a world of trouble could be avoided with a little truth.

I run with a gun, now and it's a very good idea. I wish I had been carring it instead of mace when I was attacked -- jogging in my peaceful residential neighborhood on a nice Sunday morning about a year and a half ago. For those of you relying on mace -- take my word -- it doesn't work. In my case, the wind was blowing the wrong way and I ended up in the hospital. A big stick? If I bash some dog's brains in, is that any better than shooting it.
Reading what people have to say in this thread, I get the feeling it's all very personal. I hate to say this Doc, but you've got some people who hold a mean grudge and are creating a reason to dislike you.
Outside of this gun - puppy discussion, I will say that USMPRIDE and the lawsuit that was filed is amazing. If it gets to the bottom of the Foundation and quantifies what we all suspect, it is a good thing. I would bet money that they can not account for some of the designated contributions that have been given, which is frightening.
It is interesting that Crockett spent $2,150 going to 2 conferences within a 2-month period in 2002, at a time when travel allowances in the CBA were just over $500 per faculty per year. It is likely that his travel bill exceeded $5,000 for the year. The Destin lodging was billed to his son, and was for a cottage used by 4 adults and 3 children. It was an extended family vaca for 7 days, with a little conference attached. I'm sure he attended several sessions, and avoided family/beach as much as possible.
Our first "real" sighting of DePree in May 2006...as he refers to himself in the third person:
"See, DePree isn't going to take anymore of these people refusing to have coffee dates with him because DePree is a full professor and who is full of real professionalism, see?"
