What's this? Every time I submit a request to travel I get denied, yet they are building an administrative palace (i.e., tons of new construction/renovation) on the second floor of CBED.

Where do you need to go Biz Eagle? If you're trying to get to Europe, you can probably hitch a ride on Dr. Hudson's USM Boeing 747 Eagle. I could put in a good word for you. If you have a domestic destination in mind, there's usually a spare seat on Dr. Dvorak's Economic Development Express; it's only a little Lear jet, but very comfortable, and fast. And for intra-state trips, there's always the President's big customized Greyhound "Booty Bus," a veritable cocktail party on wheels. So there's plenty of no-cost travel options there for you, with only a little prior planning required. Let me know if I can help.
Dean Doty had to have a proper holding cell made to hide Mrs. Cooley, whom some of you remember he abducted earlier this week, so I heard he cancelled the construction of the student interview suites in order to provide her with the accomodations her double agent status (and delicate condition) requires.

I know what you mean, biz eagle. I don't know if all that administrative space is needed (I do think one way about, but others may disagree), but I would say that such a move to spend extravagant amounts of $s in the current environment is not the greatest sense of judgement (i.e., no raises in years, hostile work environment, etc.).

I think Just Left answered your question a few days ago:
"Here's what you'll get from the CBED roster if you check it out. They have an associate dean, a fundraising director, a director of public relations, a director of student placement services, and fully staffed office of undergraduate advising (most opulent on campus), a director of graduate programs, a director of undergraduate programs, and a fully staffed dean's office. Just what is it that Doty does to earn more than $150K/year? All the duties are covered by someone else and in house."
It is only fair and reasonable that Dean Doty have luxurious space for himself and his minons. CBED faculty deserve offices the size of a closet that are about 100 degrees because the air conditioning doesn't work. But they are only faculty and who cares.

Actually, some of the better golfers in Hattiesburg are biz eagles. Did you already know this?

biz eagle, you can't travel in the CBED? Just had a e-mail forwarded to me indicating that one of your colleagues has gone to Jamaica 60+ times in the past few years to do "research." What, you can't get in on that?

I hate to turn this light hearted string into something serious, but as a lot of people have pointed out on this board, if you are one of the dean's cronies, nothing you may want is beyond your reach. If you are not, well ... good luck.
Not to put too fine a point on this advertised "fact" from last year, but what happened to the new Business building? Why are they doing all the 2nd floor renovation if a new building is in progress? The press saw a virtual tour of the new building. I swear I am not dreaming this. Can I have a reality check, please? I'll wait a few minutes before I commit myself to PG.

No, you didn't dream it, but then you didn't expect Dr. Doty to suffer in facilities that are not to his taste while money is collected and the building constructed. Faculty and staff can't have pay raises, but he can remodel his conference room and a good portion of the second floor.
I talked with a CBED guy a while back - I had seen the Business Bldg. drawing, and had heard that perhaps they might just simply renovate Greene. He said the best renovation for Greene Hall started with a match. Laughed about that for a while.... now they are putting $$$'s into this Bldg. ???
The money being raised for the new CBA building was a couple of million dollars, but nothing on paper. Mostly promises rather than true pledges. Then Shelby got even with the CBA Advisory Group for supporting him by firing the dean and the development officer (law suit pending) and the push for a new building vaporized. Oh sure, there were some drawings and a little blurb in the paper, but with no development officer and no real push to raise funds...no building. Talk is cheap!
The new CBA building is further away from reality than the new Trent Lott building...and that is a long way away! (If it ever gets here at all).
Is this the same CBA building that was used in the mid 1980's? It was nasty (dirty, roach infested) then!!

Virtual is the key word here. I have virtual plans for my dream house too but meanwhile my kids need a place to sleep.
The new building was projected to cost around $25 million and was part of the $50 million fundraising goal. The president promised $25 million from the state to pay for the building itself (the physical structure) and the business school set out to raise the other $25 million to support programs in the B-school. In spring of 2003, after the reorganization was announced but before it was implemented, Dean G and one of the big donors held a press conference and announced a huge start to the campaign. The business community had pledged something over $5 million (of the latter $25 million...although there was no former $25 million...) The key point is that this pledged money was contingent upon the $25 million that the president promised to obtain coming in first.
I might be off on the exact numbers but the ratios are good.

I do believe the Business School plan is in the same file drawer as the new Nursing School and the Trent Lott Project.

Now I understand the project that has everyone in such a tizzy. The construction in Green Hall is about renovating an old classroom to build small interview offices for graduating business students so that companies can recruit directly in CBED. OUTRAGEOUS! To think that a business school with a mission of "developing careers" would do anything to help the professional placement of its graduates. What would AACSB say? Oh yeah, this was one of the DEFICIENCIES that the AACSB team pointed out the last time!

There may not be any good rooms to teach them in, but they'll have a palace to interview for a job. Makes sense? Prediction: there will be very little foot traffic there. As someone put it, the students already have jobs lined up when they get to CBED, they just need the degree to advance in them.

C'mon Troll House, tell the rest of the story. How about Doty's newly refurbished conference room as well as some other administrative facility improvements.
While Dean Doty is working on refurbishing the second floor, maybe he could get someone to fix the air conditioning in the classrooms and faculty offices. Ninety plus degree temperatures make it a little hard to focus.

Always remember that it is not hot in the CBED Dean's Office, at least not in temperature.
Did you check with the proper authorities on your use of this name? I believe that all of the "Troll" related names have been reserved for future use...
