There was a story on WDAM at 6 about Gary moving to TAMU. Quoting Shelby (full story on the WDAM web site):
"As you may well remember, any research that comes out of that will have the USM as a byline because it was started here and it was funded by this institution, rather heavily, I might add," Thames says. " So I'm proud for him. I hope he's happy."
It kinda sounded like ole SFT was taking credit for Gary's research.
Actually, it appears that SFT was blindsided, which he can't have enjoyed. Rumor control on TAMU and GS's part was very well handled. Do you'all think SFT honestly did not realize a better school would scoop up GS, as we predicted would happen? Did he think because HE fired GS that no one else would want him? He seems to be that ill-informed about the humanities.

LVN,
One thing that probably really galls him is the realization that right now there is probably not a single college in the country that would hire HIM as president (or any kind of administrator) and that he will be lucky indeed merely to hang on to his current position. If there is any silver lining to the fact that he has done so much damage to good people like Gary Stringer and Frank Glamser, it is that he has done even more damage to himself -- particularly to his "place in history." He must realize that all the folks who are presently kow-towing to him (because of his present position) will drop him immediately once he leaves the Dome. In a few years I suspect that even his biggest present supporters will be embarrassed to have been associated with him.

Somehow I think USM will be buried in 3 pages of acknowledgements in small type. The blurb on Gary will say he is a prof. at Texas A & M. Once again, Shelby doesn't understand the humanities . . . . I doubt you can take your lab with you, but you can take John Donne.

All I can say is, "HA!" to SFT. That acknowledgement to USM *will* be buried on page 103 or some such well-deserving spot.
So, you hope Gary's happy, Shelboo? After all you put him and his family through? What a load of....non-stinky beige paint.

Wow! Thanks for this list, This Little Pig! This would make an excellent basis for a letter to the HA; if you cannot write it, I will be glad to; just let me know. Such a letter would also help call local attention to the existence of the petition. Of course, the list of colleges where people KNOW about the situation at USM but may not know about the petition is even longer. Every single one of the people at my college who read about the mess at USM in The Chronicle and who have mentioned the situation to me has been appalled by SFT (and thankful that we have much better leadership here). Again, thanks for the list.
Here's the letter I just sent off; thanks again, TLP!

The list of colleges where people know of Thames' actions and are repulsed by them is much, much longer.
Thus, while Gary Stringer, the professor whom Thames unfairly fired from USM, was easily able to get a much more prestigious job at Texas A&M, the chances of Shelby Thames ever being able to be an administrator at another American college are close to zero. He has not only severely damaged the reputation of USM but has also just about destroyed whatever reputation he himself once possessed. If he truly cared about USM's future, he would resign immediately.
