David Johnson, a graduate student in the School of Social Work at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been elected to the board of directors of the Mississippi chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. He also currently serves as secretary of the President's Council at the university, on the board of directors of the AIDS Services Coalition of Hattiesburg, and is a member of Mississippi United to End Homelessness, the Balance of State Continuum of Care for Mississippi and the Community Collaboration Committee of Pine Grove Recovery Center/Forrest General Hospital. He is the son of Howard and Willa Dean Johnson of Kingsport, Tenn.
Is this really SFT "pumping up" DJ, or just a standard release? Working closely with PR at my institution, I've seen a lot of people gripe about not getting press releases when the real bottom line is that they never make PR aware of "newsworthy" information.
I'd say this is proof that the house elves toiling away in the PR kitchen actually do their jobs in spite of things.

Actually, I should clear this up quickly. I asked the PR dept to do the press release myself for my hometown newspaper. Just a little "gift" for my parents who are in their 70's. I didn't expect it to go out on the USM News listserv. SFT had nothing to do with this.
Thanks for the congrats, Invictus. It is appreciated. I'm sure others will take a slanted view. No good deed goes unpunished, after all. LOL

David:
I'd just like to add my congrats to you and your recognition for your work with AIDS, homelessness, and other important issues. While I wish that the PUC didn't exist, I'm not going to hold you accountable for its existence. Good luck to you in all of your work (I have friends who are social workers, so I know you're not in it for the $$!), and congrats on this achievement.
Thanks for being involved in so many humane and charitable causes, and thanks, too, for being (so far as I can recall) the only member of the PUC who takes the time to respond consistently to concerns of people on this board.

Thanks Andrea and Sympathizer. You are both far too kind. Truthfully, I'm a bit chagrined that the release went out to the University community and even moreso that it made this board. I really was just trying to do something nice for my parents who probably think that at 47 it is about da*n time I did something worthwhile with my life. LOL
Sympathizer, I do try to read the boards a couple of times a day when I can. I don't respond as much as I did at first for a couple of reasons. The first is that the news about what is going on in the PC is being reported pretty widely and we have now put in place some systems that hopefully will put the APPROVED minutes of the PC out there for those who want to read them. The second is that I've found it better to listen to what you folks have to say than to put my own two cents in the fray which seems to frequently create more controversy than resolution.
It says something that people would assume that the release was promoted by SFT because I am on the PC. I'm not sure what it says. Something about the administration. Also, something about the folks who jumped to that conclusion. Nothing profound on either count, I'm sure. The silly thing is that anyone would think SFT had nothing better to do than promote a grad student's meager accomplishments.
I wish all of you the best day possible. Back to the articles for my Grief and Bereavement class for me.

David,
I think it mainly indicates that there is a deep, deep (and well justified) distrust of SFT. I think that people also do have sincere concerns about how he will use (and has been using) the PUC -- even (and perhaps especially) good people like yourself, who can inadvertently be exploited to lend credibility to his efforts to rehabilitate his grossly tarnished reputation and his damaged standing with the IHL. I hope you will always remember when you are sitting across the table from him that this is a man who has down huge damage to the lives of some very good people. I feel contempt for him, and I am hundreds of miles away; I can only imagine how people in Hattiesburg must feel, and I can therefore understand why they are immediately suspicious of anything that seems even remotely connected to him and his PR machine.

Actually the one I'm reading right now is on "group grief." I'll let you know if it seems applicable.

David,
I'm sorry. I made a newsmaker header template that I keep in a folder in Windows and it looks like in addition to your folks, the whole freakin' world got your newsmaker. My mistake; I must have forgotten to take off the usual code on the template (that's how the editorial assistant knows where to send stuff) and just have the Tennessee address on there. I hope I didn't embarrass you. But I hope your mama and daddy are proud - they should be.

Dear "Oops",
I take it you're the house elf responsible for David's "newsmaker." If so, I hope he isn't embarrassed about it. When a USM student serves on a state organization, everybody associated with USM ought to know it. Mr. Johnson reflects in a positive manner on those who currently work at & attend USM, as well as those of us who attended in the past. I'm glad I got to read the "newsmaker."
