Tuition increase approved for University of Southern Mississippi
The state College Board announced today it has approved a 5.5 percent in-state tuition increase for the University of Southern Mississippi.
Hikes for nonresidents could be between 4.5 to 11 percent, according to a press release from the 12-member board that governs the state’s eight public universities.
Southern Miss President Shelby Thames said last week he was seeking an 11 percent tuition increase. If the board did not approve it, he warned cuts would have to be made university-wide, though he declined to comment on where such cuts might be made.
Thames was traveling back to Hattiesburg from the College Board meeting at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus and was unavailable for comment, according to his spokeswoman.
