1. Word is spreading that a new wave of departures looms, and it could be headed by Noel Polk (as reported on this board).  Word on the street is that another prominent COAL faculty (not Polk) could be on the way out, and another whole department in CBED could be seriously hit.  Thanks gorod, chaser and envelope.

2. As as being reported very well on this board, the COST is becoming a powder keg quite fast.  Stories are swirling about several internal battles that are developing there.  We will keep up as best we can with these as they develop.  Thanks insider.

3. Athlon's national football magazine has USM losing its first two games --- at Nebraska then home against Cal.  If earlier stories are true, the second defeat (if it comes) against Cal will doom both home attendance even more for the rest of 2004 as well as JB's job security at USM.  The Bower-Thames struggle is becoming the new prominent feature problem at USM these days.  Thanks mclubber for the Athlon's tip, and for others in this ongoing saga.

4. Indications are that the PUC is really doing some good for SFT with the IHL Board.  Though those on the poles surely must know it's a ploy, apparently some of the more neutral, out-of-the-loop members of the board seem to think it's a great idea, and have inquired at other universities about use of a similar setup there as well.  Thanks capitolbuck.

5. Word on the street is that William Carey officials may start to make contacts with some of USM's local financial supporters, given that SFT seems to have discarded any serious efforts at private fundraising.  They (WCC officials) are pleased with their ad campaign efforts, and consider this step as a possible phase II in a  larger effort.  Thanks crusaid and gorod.
