Today, a day of national mourning, the University of Southern Mississippi administration fails to make note of the occasion in any way. I've waited for someone from the administration to arrage a remembrance at the Chapel, but no.
Aubrey Lucas would have brought the University Community together; Shelby has driven us apart so that the campus is a place to work, draw a paycheck and go home. Sigh.....
It is sad and unfortunate that this university has a very disrupted community. Although I am only a student, I have been interested in bringing this university community together since I first stepped foot on this campus two years ago. I have an idea that I thought might work during the Christmas holiday season, but I highly anticipate that it won't. I would love to hear some thoughts/suggestions on this topic, a topic which I am sure is highly thought of but hardly spoken about.
Never, ever say that you are ONLY a student. If it weren't for students, teachers and professors (and university presidents for that matter) would not have jobs. You can't teach if there is no one there to learn. Students have a lot more power than they think. We'll just have to wait until the fall semester to see what happens if and when the students organize.

I have always agreed with the idea that if it weren't for students, there would be no university. I also agree that we have a lot more power than we think we do.
However, I just wish that there was something that the students could do to help the different university departments come together and get along more. It seems to me that I am winning a losing battle by brainstorming new things for the university community, but I will NOT give up without a fight. That is why I want to get some input from wise and experienced faculty who have, for lack of a better term, 'been around the block' at Southern Miss for a while and who know what has and hasn't worked. It saddens me to see a divide between the different university departments and even more when there are valuable university-wide programs that occur on campus and little to no one shows up for them.
P.S.- For some reason, my memory was having an identity crisis earlier. The previous post by 'Informed Student' was really written by me 'Involved Student'.
