There is a very interesting data base available at www.indystar.com--the Indianapolis newspaper. You can access it by going to their sports section. The original article was posted on March 30 I believe. Through the freedom of information act, the paper got the NCAA financial data from most schools. It has all revenue sources and expenses from all sports. For example, USM took in $1.3 million in football ticket sales last year. The football program took in almost $5 million of a total sports income of slightly over $18 million. Of course, that is small potatoes compared to the UT's and UCS's of the world, but it is very, very interesting. Check it out.
Revenue to Expense comparison was extremely interesting.
We are $1.6 million in the black. That does not seem interesting to me, especially considering they are trying to save money for expansion. Maybe that means the university can stop giving $1.8 million to athletics.
What is interesting to me is that student fees makes up almost 30% of the budget ($5.2 million). Ticket sales are only $1.8 million. I think the students are getting the short end of the stick. They are told that free tickets are such a privilege (not every school gets these), but 20 yard line seats, behind the goal in basketball...with the proportion of money given, they should get 50 yard line and chair back seats. I know this would never happen, but I wonder how many students know that their fees are paying this much of the athletic budget (more than even the rich alumni, $4 million).

manova, you hit the nail on the head on both counts. Compare USM to SEC schools. You will see a fraction of USM's level of student fees at those places, which are generally much larger in terms of enrollment also, and you will find no direct institutional support.
Can I assume (after reading this article and following the links) that this means that USM students and Shelby Thames are keeping the football program alive?
