USM faculty still has concerns

The University of Southern Mississippi Faculty Senate on Friday continued discussion of its general dissatisfaction with a host of recent administrative moves, culminating with talk of a motion of no confidence, which was shelved for further debate at next month's meeting.

Most senators seemed to prefer alternate measures of voicing their concern about administrative decision-making, and expressed interest in formally asking state Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith to provide oversight of President Shelby Thames' governance ahead of his expected resignation next May....

Quote from Dr. Grimes,

"The research productivity is not what you would call research productivity that justifies new positions."

Let's be very clear, these are not "new" positions!!!!!! These were existing vacancies; in fact, 6 of now 11 unfilled vacancies. At least present the facts Dr. Grimes. Additionally, what exactly does this statement mean? If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated. If such is going to be used as a measuring stick, it should be used for all units (including CISE). Fairness? DATA-BASED decision making??? I suggest not.

A colleague recently did a head to head comparison of psychology at Ole Miss and USM-faculty by faculty member. Research productivity at USM is better compared to Ole Miss--both quantity and quality. Dr. Grimes is just plain embarassing himself at the moment. He should have learned by now that if he has nothing intelligent to say, he should just keep his mouth shut.

If SFT and the Provost had a lick of common sense, they would have pleaded poverty due to Katrina and asked psychology to limit their hires this year to a couple. Psychology would have coorperated, and that would have been that. Instead, Provost Grimes keeps digging himself into a deeper and deeper hole. Someone please take the shovel away from this man.

What this faculty needs to do is pass another no confidence resoltuion . This is a good ineffective remedy for every non existent problem known.

If one would take care to notice, many of CISE's recent "hires" (of the last few years) are USM grads further muddying the nasty waters that run through that dept. They've lost a couple of outside hires who came in circa 2002/3 who realized they'd been duped. The word on this dept. is out - Cronyism/Nepotism/NoProfessionalismwhatsoever.

What does it mean to shelve no-confidence? No-confidence?
