The Southern Miss softball team dropped a hard fought 10-5 decision to No. 13 Louisiana-Lafayette tonight.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 21-24, while Louisiana-Lafayette improves to 30-6.
"We really played well," Head Coach Gay McNutt said. "We did give up some home runs, but we also hit the ball well. We had nine hits tonight, and Stefni Loteif (Louisiana-Lafayette's Head Coach) said that's the hardest their pitcher has been hit.
"We're right where we need to be. We're leading Conference USA and I feel good about the rest of the season."
For starters, when a team beats another team by 5 runs, the team that won the game considers it a blowout. Secondly, when you lose by 5 runs and give up 6 homeruns, you did not play well. And if our coach thinks that being 21-24 and 7-2 with 15 conference games left (mostly with the upper echelon teams in our conference) is right where we need to be, then the standards of this program have really dropped to an all-time low.

Here is an example of how aspiring to be a big time athletic program directs fans away from the main purpose of a university - academics. Even when a coach provides moral support for the players, some fans are perpetually unnhappy and grousing.
Team GPA was much higher under LHC and the team was better. It's not fans being tore up, just don't try and snow me and tell me we are playing better when we are not.
