What is this?

Just read a story on Richard Hadden and the "Pinion Research Group" which seems to be working on providing space (leased of course) for USM GC programming at the "Healthmark Center" (whatever that is).  I would love some more information on that from those who know.  However, what really caused me to think is the phrase used in the USM public relations release:

"Pinion is a Southern Miss research foundation company in support of the
university's mission."

OK.  Exactly what does that one mean?  What is the "Southern Miss research foundation"  is that the same thing as the foundation?  How does one become one of their "companies" and does this signify a true affiliation with the university or is it just a title?  Curious and thanks in advacne for any information on this.

Pinion Properties LLC, a USM Research Foundation company, has announced that the official name of this property where the Gulf Coast Student Service Center is located is "Healthmark Center."  This name does not represent any services or any service organization, in healthcare or otherwise.  The official Healthmark Center address is 1520 Broad Avenue.  This new name will also appear on signs around the property and in Healthmark's advertising and press releases.

Our name and signage -- Gulf Coast Student Service Center -- will remain the same. Our mailing and shipping address will also remain 730 East Beach Blvd., Long Beach, MS  39560.

Wrack,  good information.  But my original question remains; what is the Southern Miss Research Foundation and how is it (and the buisnesses that make it up) tied to the university?

Hadden, MD, was hired about the time USM was making plans to take over the VA hospital on the coast. In Oct. 2005 the CL referred to him as "a representative of the Pinion Company" who was talking to Joachim about USMGC renovations, and then in another CL story the next day as "the university's director of strategic venture development."

Pinion perhaps has the same nebulous relationship to the university as Noetic: a for-profit operation functioning loosely under the university's umbrella, controlled by officers who incorporate themselves under Mississippi law as limited liability corporations mostly hidden behind registered agents (lawyers). These officers may or may not also be on the USM payroll.

The Research Foundation isn't the same as the Foundation. The RF started under Cotten, then was taken over by Dvorak. The Thames PR machine made claims that Dvorak grew the RF from $10,000 to tens of millions by including intellectual property donations in the accounts.

Ever try to buy a cup of coffee with your "intellectual property"?
