"Because in the last two years we have outgrown our economic development efforts to such proportions, we are looking at a variety of ways to make those efforts as effective as possible," Mader said Friday. "We're exploring some different models to determine best practices for marrying our assets with business, industry and government. We've outgrown ourselves and have to look at changing some efforts."
What a bunch of double-speak gobbledygook! "Outgrown our efforts?" "Marrying our assets with business, industry, and government?" "Outgrown ourselves?" What does any of this mean in regular English? Does anyone have a "Mader Translator???"
ADP president Phil Halstead would neither confirm nor deny talking to Dvorak about joining the ADP staff.
Well, I take this to mean that talks did happen, and they didn't want her. Perhaps she can go work for Mark and Hack's law firm now?

Well, one might interpret "marrying our assets with business, industry, and government" to mean commingling university funds with the private sector and local agencies so that business cronies & elected officials all get a slice of the university pie. When funds are commingled, it becomes very difficult to "follow the money."
If Phil Bryant had half a brain, he'd be heading to Hattiesburg with a team of his nastiest auditors.
Methinks that Truth needs to update the "Truth Table" to encompass the USM Research Foundation, Mississippi Development Authority, the ADP & other organizations. I'm beginning to think even that the MURA of 1992 is basically a system that allows university personnel -- including professors -- to launder money, gain tax advantages & utilize public facilities for personal gain.
MURA is not quite as open for rapine & pillage as grant money, but any semi-competent attorney could find a zillion ways to circumvent the conflict of interest clauses in the law. This may explain why USM has a lawyer rather than a researcher running its research operations.
I don't think she is a lawyer. Does she claim to be? One has to have passed a bar exam to be a lawyer. Just finishing law school does not make the graduate a lawyer.

Mississippi Universities Research Act. You can do a quick Google. Ole Miss' Office of Research & Sponsored Programs has a good general overview with a lot of info about conflicts of interest, etc.

I stand corrected. This could explain why so many people perceive the university-industry links at USM to contain conflicts of interest. USM may need a real lawyer hiding them for it

I believe you're correct. In many states, including Texas and Mississippi (unless they've recently changed the requirements), one can sit for the bar exam without having earned a law degree. Passing the exam results in admission to that state's bar. On the other hand, there are many with law degrees who are unable to pass the bar exam, or simply opt not to take it. These individuals cannot practice law, or represent themselves as attorneys.
As a somewhat related aside, I was recently introduced to a new junior associate at my wife's firm, who'd earned his law degree at Harvard. I asked whether having attended a non-Texas law school was a disadvantage in preparing for our bar exam, and he found my question laughable. He said that virtually nothing taught in law school was of any practical value insofaras passing the bar. All the information he'd required to master the exam was obtained from a one month bar review course.
"Watch for news soon on this item...I've got a funny feeling that this one is TRUE! Angie's going to the ADP, mark my words."
Wouldn't want this construed as an "attack".....if I was as wrong as most of the "predictions" on this board, I think I would just hold off making them until the news came. It is humorous how when a prediction does not go your way, you guys think that their is something going on behind the scenes. As Freud said, "Sometimes a banana is just... a banana."
