How Do Head Hunters Work
Permalink Closed

The recent hire of president at MSU involved a head hunter firm. That practice likely will continue in the future. There are many different ways that can work. Does anyone know how the process works at the Board? Some firms have lists of candidates that they ferret out and sign up. I doubt at this level that the person solicited pays any thing. Switch to the duties performed by the head hunter firm for the Board. Does the head hunting firm handle all of the details for the Board, such as handling the applications from individuals who are not represented by the head hunting firm? Is there an incentive for the firm to lobby the Board on behalf of their listed candidates so that the firm gains reputation as a head hunting firm? I am not against using a head hunting firm; I am interested in knowing the parameters of how they were used in this past search. Perhaps someone knows about this process and can fill us in on how it works at the College Board.

AT this level, the employer generally pays the entire fee, and it can be a healthy fee.  The HH firm would have an incentive to lobby the board for their candidate.  Hopefully, the board presented to the HH firm a list of KSAOs (job skills, competencies, knowledge, etc.) and the HH searched for candidates with those characteristics.

Outside your question can be answered by asking the ADP board!
